Chapter 236 The Swing
What Jill desired the most was money.
But she suspected that Charles would lie to her, so she pondered for a bit and said, "Charles, give me the money or else I won't open the door!"
Charles came outside in a hurry. Why would he carry the money with him?
He didn't even bring his wallet.
"I don't have my wallet with me. Open the door first. I promise that I'll give you the money once I step outside, " Charles exclaimed. He knew that Nancy had a wound on her shoulder, which was getting worse with each passing minute Nancy spent in the basement. It would be troublesome if the wound got infected.
Therefore, Charles' top priority was to take Nancy out of the basement.
"I know you are lying. You won't fool me. If you want to come out, hand over the twenty million immediately. Or else, you and Nancy will die inside!" Jill didn't believe that Charles would hand over the money once he stepped outside. She turned around and left them there.
Charles was anxious.
"Jill, it's only twenty million. Just open the door, and I promise I'll ask someone to give you the money as soon as possible!" Charles yelled.
Jill stopped in her tracks. She didn't expect that for Charles, twenty million were so insignificant.
If she had known earlier, she would have asked for more, at least fifty million.
"Jill, I'm talking to you. Did you hear me?" Charles kicked the door in a fit of rage.
"I want to see the money right now. If you can ask someone, tell them to bring it here, or else, humph!" Jill snorted and left.
She was not in a hurry. She was fishing for something big.
It was not easy to get hold of Charles. Why would she let him go, now that she had him?
Charles called Hiram in a hurry, but there was no signal in the basement.
"Damn it! Jill, there is no signal in the basement!"
But Jill wasn't there anymore.
Charles had no choice but walk back helplessly.
Curled up in a corner, Nancy moaned, "Oh, it hurts. It hurts! Charles."
Every time she winced, Charles' heart ached.
"Nancy, hold on a little longer. I'll find a way to take you out of this right away!" He looked around and found nothing in the room. However, a swing board caught his attention.
He walked over and picked it up. "The swing board is made up of Mahogany. It looks old, but I'm not sure if it will do the trick or not,"
Charles murmured to himself, walking towards the window with the board in his hand.
"Swing board." Nancy heard his words and recalled a memory.
When she was quite young, her mother had asked someone to build her a swing in the garden. When her mother wasn't busy, she would accompany Nancy to the garden to play on the swing. Nancy's happiness knew no bounds when she was with her mother.
But her period of bliss was cut short with the sudden car accident, and then her father divorced her mother. Not long after, Jill married into the Ning family and became their new hostess.
Since then, her mother could only lie in the bed. The happiness she once knew was gone.
After a while, Fannie was born, and Nancy became the redundant one for the Ning family.
She would never forget that day when she came back from school, she saw Fannie sitting on the swing in the garden, and Jill pushing her from behind. Fannie giggled, and her skirt was blown up by the wind, revealing her slender legs.
Tears welled up in Nancy's eyes when she pictured how her mother used to push her on the swing.
"Sister is here, mom," Fannie suddenly shouted.
Jill turned to look at Nancy, and her face became serious. "Little girl, you just came back from school. Why are you crying?"
"I want to play on the swing as well, can I?" Nancy looked pleadingly at the fierce-looking Jill and begged her.
"Tell me, why are you crying? Are you unhappy to see Fannie playing on the swing?" Jill growled.
"No, I just want to play on the swing for a while!" Nancy shouted stubbornly. She just missed her mother, dearly. She missed how happy she used to make Nancy.
"Fannie, come down!" Jill grabbed the rope of the swing and carried Fannie down. Clearly, Fannie wanted to play more because she burst into tears when Jill put her down.
"It's just a swing, isn't it? No one uses a swing this heavy anymore. Don't cry my dear. I will tear this swing down and buy you a new one, which will be a thousand times better than this one!" Jill held Fannie in her arms and shouted at the servants in the garden, "Remove this swing!"
The servants had been working in the Ning family for several years. Nancy's mother, Jade, treated them well.
They also understood why the swing was so dear to Nancy.
"Madam, why do you wish to pull down the swing?" a servant asked cautiously.
"Humph, didn't you listen to me? Didn't you hear me?" Jill replied arrogantly.
Tears fell from Nancy's eyes.
"Pull it down!" Jill ordered.
The servants didn't dare disobey her, so they removed the swing.
Suddenly, Nancy pounced on the board of the swing and said, "Mom made this swing for me. You can't pull it down. Please!"
But Nancy was so tiny that Jill lifted her, despite her protests.
"It's just a swing. Don't cry!" She scolded, "You guys pull it down quickly. Hurry up!"
"No, please!" Nancy was in tears as she begged Jill not to remove the swing.
Jill slapped her across the face, "Don't listen to her. Just take it down!"
Nancy slumped to the ground. She watched several servants tear down the swing.
With her little hands, Nancy tried to hit Jill. Jill was so angry that she took her to the basement.
Nancy and the swing board were thrown in together. "Nancy, you just reflect on what you have done. I'll leave you and your swing board alone!"
Nancy held the swing board close to her chest.
This memory reduced her to tears. She muttered, "Mom, the swing."
Charles didn't hear what Nancy said. He picked up the swing and smashed the nearby window with it. Shards of glass scattered everywhere as the window was smashed open. This enabled Charles to climb through the glassless window.
As he jumped outside, he saw Jill fighting Clark.
"Bitch! How dare you offend Charles? If Nancy dies in the basement, you and Fannie will die as well. Give me the key!"
"I won't hand over the key to you. I don't even know if Fannie is dead or not. I want them to die inside. I want to avenge Fannie! It's all that bitch's fault!" Jill bellowed.
