Chapter 227 What He Wants
"Let's go home." After some contemplation, Charles made up his mind to ignore his mother. There was no possible compromise-he couldn't just let her be. She would keep doing these meaningless things if he
showed even the slightest yielding.
"What the hell are you doing, Charles?" Angelina shouted hysterically.
He couldn't just shame her and leave her like this when all eyes were on them! It would bring unthinkable embarrassment.
Nancy chose to be logical in the midst of the brewing trouble. She grabbed Charles's arm and said, "You can't leave now."
"I agree. Charles, Mrs. Fu is the host of this party. It would not be appropriate for you to leave like this," Mrs. Wang said, attempting to diffuse the situation.
"That's right, Mr. Fu. We were all waiting for you," Lena said as she came over with several other girls.
Nancy looked at Charles. She knew Angelina would stop at nothing until he was in this girl's arms.
Charles's handsome features were twisted in his impatience. He was fed up with all this. Just as he was about to snap, Joseph came over.
"Auntie, if it's the women, let me deal with them." He flashed them a bewitching smile and then turned to Charles. "Go now, and take Nancy with you. I'll take it from here," he whispered.
"You... Why are you here?" The sight of Joseph brought an unsettling feeling to Angelina. She had purposely left him out of the party in fear that he would stir up trouble, but even after that, he had found a way to be present.
"How cold of you, Aunt. I'm also single. There's nothing strange about me being here, is there?" Joseph said, a devilish glint in his eyes.
"Alright, I'll leave this to you. Take mother home later," Charles muttered under his breath.
"Got it. Leave it to me," Joseph answered and winked at Nancy.
She ducked her head down quickly at his playful gesture.
This man had playboy spelled all over him, and Nancy did not like it one bit.
"Let's go. Daddy and Mommy are you going to take us home now?" Nadia asked expectantly.
"Charles, you..." Angelina would not be deterred. Even now, she was still trying to stop him.
Joseph quickly stepped up to her, effectively blocking her path. "This is a great party, Aunt. I must say, you outdid yourself this time. We can't let all this go to waste can we? Never mind brother. It's a good thing that I'm here, wouldn't you agree? Ladies, let's dance!" Joseph was evidently in his element. He was charming and uninhibited, effortlessly diverting attention upon himself and enlivening the atmosphere. Charles held Nadia in one hand and held Bobby's hand in the other. They walked out without looking back.
"Charles!" Angelina shouted after them.
"Auntie, all that stress is only going to make you older. That's enough. I'm here!" Joseph stopped her again. "Ladies, it seems that my aunt is a little lonely. Why don't you chat with her a bit?" As his words, several women flocked around Angelina, and she had no way to escape.
Joseph flashed another one of devilish grins at Nancy and said, "You're welcome. You can pay me back for this later!"
Nancy didn't even bother responding and walked out.
Charles drove Nancy and the children home.
Nancy was silent as the car sped through the road.
"Mommy, why were there so many ladies around daddy?" Nadia suddenly asked.
"Because your father is handsome and girls like him."
'Tm handsome too, Mommy!" Bobby said, rising up a bit from his seat. "Am I going to be popular with girls too?"
Nancy was taken aback at his question and almost chuckled. She rubbed his little head and said, "Well... Of course. I'm sure many girls will like you!"
Charles looked at him with a furrowed brow, as if he was unsatisfied at the exchange. "Bobby, even if you attract many girls, don't forget that you should only stay with the one you like. Do you understand?" he said.
"But... I saw Uncle Joseph. He had so many girls around him too" Bobby asked, confused at his father's words. "Uncle even told me that having a lot of girls proved that he was a real man. I also want to be a real man..."
Charles could feel the beginnings of a headache stir in his temple. Joseph, that fiend. It was unbelievable that he would say all those twisted things to an innocent child, and his son nonetheless. "Don't listen to him. You just have to keep in mind what I had just told you," he said, wanting to straighten his son's alarming line of thinking.
"I also want to like many girls!" Bobby argued.
"No is no! Are we clear on that?" Charles said a little more firmly that he intended.
Bobby kept his mouth shut at the rise in his voice. Charles hadn't wanted to scare him, but he couldn't go back on his words either. Discipline came with strict hands. He couldn't be soft now when his son was in danger of following in Joseph's footsteps. There was no way he would let that happen. Just thinking about it made him feel like he was aging faster.
Nadia threw herself into Nancy's arms and said, "Mommy, angry daddy is so scary!"
"It's okay, Nadia. Daddy's not mad at you," Nancy comforted her. Then she turned to hold Bobby in her arms and said, "Bobby, don't listen to what Uncle Joseph says, okay?"
Children were impressionable, especially at this tender age. Joseph was a playboy, and he wasn't exactly the best example, with so many women around him. He had no qualms flaunting his own conquests even to the children.
Nancy was worried that Bobby would be misled by his ways.
"Okay. I understand, Mommy!" Bobby nodded.
For the remaining time of the drive home, Charles silently brewed in his seat. He had had enough with his mother's incessant meddling. He wanted nothing to do with all her ways.
It seemed that the world was hell bent on pestering him.
When they got home,
Nancy bathed the children and then washed up herself.
She stepped out of the bathroom and saw the light in the study still on.
She walked over and found Charles sitting at the desk and looking through documents.
The dim light fell on his face, making the features appear sharper. His face was wrought in concentration, but the tension in his face that betrayed his inner preoccupation with other matters. Nancy stepped in quietly, gently pinching his shoulder.
He had just taken a shower himself. The familiar scent of his body wash enveloped her in this proximity.
"Hello there, Mr. Lady-killer," she said.
Charles put the documents down and pulled Nancy over. "What? Are you happy about that?" he asked with an annoyed expression.
A smile broke on Nancy's face as she put her arms around his neck. "Of course. It's extremely satisfying to see so many women running after a man who belongs to me."
"A man who belongs to you, huh? Have you been hanging out with Joseph lately too? You've gotten better with your words." Charles chuckled. This was the first time Nancy had been so open with him even after being together for so long.
"Please... I have nothing to learn from him. Haha..." She leaned down and pressed her lips against his.
Charles reached for the unfinished painting and said, "You have nothing to do now, right. Finish this painting."
She rubbed her eyes and asked, "Do you really want me to draw?"
"Of course!" Charles eyes burned at her.
His gaze was dark with expectation.
"Why do you keep asking me to finish that painting? Or is it that there's something else you want to say?" Nancy was aware of his intentions. He wanted proof of her identity as the real mother of the two children. It made her feel cornered and anxious. She was at ease with her life at present, and the future would be uncertain once her identity was revealed.
"You know what I want and what I'm waiting for."
Nancy broke away from Charles. She was not yet ready to face a past that she had kept buried years ago. "I want to be alone for a while, Charles."
