Chapter 74. One Day They’ll Be Gone

Noah POV

“You looked like you had gone bankrupt. What happened?” Brent greeted me when! passed by him after crossing the street.

He was standing next to a tree, and he was moking.

“None of your business,” I replied dully.

Brent threw the cigarette butt and stepped

“It didn’t go well with Briana?” He was guessing before he spun on his heels to jog behind me. Now, he was walking alongside the.

I was about to go to the house when I realized something. I cocked my head to the side and peered at him in the dimness of the night.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, frowning

Brent shrugged.

“I just heard on higher authority that you were panic–buying houses. I came to see for myself.” He was laughing at me. I was so sure of it.

Brent wouldn’t come just to exchange a few words. He was up to something.

I nodded.

“Need a place to stay. Parking on the street is way too risky.” I responded.

It is the truth, anyway, I needed a place to stay that was near my children. It was less stressful that way. My house is in the other part of the city. Going back and forth to meet my children will be taxing since I am also maintaining a business.

“Good decision. Buy a house directly opposite your ex’s house at three times the market price. Very businesslike.” Brent flicked his hands in approval, but the sarcasm was not lost on me.

I knew he was subtly dissing me.

“So what are you trying to imply?

Brent pulled a face.

“Nothing, I was just pointing out the brilliance of such a decision. Now, you can also

spy on your wife and her dates.”

Brent emphasized the word dates, stopping me from opening the main door.

“What dates?” I asked, confused. “Briana only had that one date with Anthony Goldstone. Her brothers said so.” I said, bragging about my sleuthing techniques.

I opened the door and let myself in. Brent followed while tutting at my ignorance.

“Poor Noah. Didn’t you know that your ex–wife is the rave nowadays? She caught the eyes of too many bachelors at the launch of their hotel. Just this evening, Marcus Ford met with an investor who proposed marriage to Briana.”

That was news to me. Still, I was sure Brent was teasing me.

My gut twisted at the knowledge. I hate it when Brent toyed with my feelings like this. I took a deep breath.

“I didn’t know you had a penchant to gossip about other people’s lives. Is that your new occupation?” I announced before slumping on the sofa.

I realized I was tired.

Brent laughed. “I never changed careers. It goes with the turf. Didn’t you know? Gossip is my life. I thrive on it. It is the only way to stay on top of my game.”

I gave him the flip.

Then, I rested my head on the back of the sofa, feeling tired but fulfilled.

I remembered the kiss I shared with Briana and licked my lips. It was like I could still

taste her.

A sudden need for my ex–wife gnawed at me. It’s been too long. I haven’t been with anyone in five years. For the first two years, I was so busy with treatments and rehabilitation. The accident damaged my legs, and I had to undergo therapy.

“You are smiling. Aren’t you worried about Briana’s suitors?”

I shook my head. “They can court her all they want. Briana is mine.” I said with enough finality.

“You can’t be too complacent. Luke Bennett is quite a catch. He also has a clean record no exes in the past, no divorce record, and certainly no children out of wedlock. He was a bright and promising young man. He and Briana are closer in age, too.”

That got me straightening in my seat. Hooked at Brent with narrowed eyes.

“Are you trying to piss me off?”

Brent got this innocent look on. “Of course not. I am just reminding you that your

wife is a catch herself. With her name, beauty, wealth, and business skills, she can be an asset to any man in the business.

“Briana’s mine!” I growled.

Brent laughed so hard he had to clutch his stomach and slam his hands on the table.

“Too bad Briana and her brothers do not think that way.”

I rose from the sofa and glared at him, realizing what I was missing.

Brent knew!

“Since when did you know she was a Ford by birth?” I hissed in annoyance.

Brent wiped his eyes, but his shoulders still shook in merriment.

“I thought you would have guessed by now. It didn’t take me long after I saw the children’s birth certificate.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked menacingly, leaning close to punch him in the arm.

Brent was quicker. He must have realized my intent because he shoved me off of him.

“Let’s just say I love to see you stew. Anyway, watch out. I think Marcus was keen on merging the Bennett Group of Companies and the Ford Empire. Don’t lag. One day you will wake up and they are gone.
