Chapter 108 -
Jeremiah pondered for a few seconds before speaking. "The Andersons may not be at the forefront of the circle, but you are famous within the circle of first and second-rate youngsters. You are said to be smart and resourceful. Perhaps you can help me come up with ideas." "You flatter me, Master Jeremiah." Savannah knew exactly what he wanted after hearing his words.
"It isn't hard to screw with Griffin. In my opinion, he's a man with brawn and no brains, and has a violent temperament. He can't withstand provocation at all. Why don't you seize him by his weakness, Master Jeremiah? Provoke him into a race against you. If he loses, he'll quit the club and refer to you as Master Jeremiah every time you meet regardless of the occasion. Even Harlow's presence will be no exception. Griffin is such an unruly man. Having him refer to you as Master will be a far better humiliation than beating him up."
Hearing Savannah's words, Jeremiah slowly raised his brows, revealing a faint sneer.
Savannah continued, "I heard that your driving skills are comparable to some professional racers, Master Jeremiah. Griffin will definitely lag behind no matter what. Even if he's aware that your driving skills are top-notch, he won't be able to stand the aggression. He will go for it even if he's aware that it's going to be a trap. What do you think, Master Jeremiah?"
"Simply put, all I need to do is embarrass him, yes?" Jeremiah took one final drag from his cigarette and gave the idea some thought. Suddenly, he smacked the couch with a bark of laughter. "All right. We'll do it as you say. How would you like me to help you, Savannah? You did help me after all."
Savannah quickly replied, "You're far too kind, Master Jeremiah. It is my honor to serve you." "Haha! That's not how things work. I owe you for helping me. Feel free to seek me out should you need any help in the future."
"Thank you, Master Jeremiah. I won't be bothering you any longer. Don't forget to let me know when the race is going to take place. I'll come cheer you on." Savannah then left.
Jeremiah smiled. "She really isn't a simple person. It's no wonder she's Rose's confidant. Haha!"
Juliette frowned. "Why is she helping you? Does she have something against Griffin?"
"I heard that Griffin sent her little brother right into the ER. She wants revenge against him, but she can't face him head-on. That's why she wants me to lend a hand and teach Griffin a lesson. Then again, her idea is rather decent. I'll treat it as a favor."
"What a terrifying woman. You're doing her a favor while also owing her for it." Juliette was deep in thought. No one knew exactly what was on her mind.
Savannah was in a good mood after leaving the billiard hall. Just as she was about to drive back to the hospital to visit Tristan, she called Rose's number. She always felt that it would be better to tell Rose about the matter. After all, she was her biggest supporter. It would not affect anything if she did not mention a word about it, but it would prevent Rose from overthinking everything.
"I didn't expect for you to reach out to Griffin. You're pretty smart." Rose was also surprised to hear the news.
"I've learnt a lot having been by your side, Ms. Schmidt. You could also say you contributed to my talents," Savannah replied.
"Did I contribute?" There was a furrow in between her brows. Savannah was already famous even before Rose got to know her. It was a good thing to be so slick, but one would lose their credibility if they were too slick. This made Rose wary of Savannah. "Your intelligence is something innate and has nothing to do with me. Maggie and Garrett's engagement party is tomorrow. If you have time, you should drop by to celebrate."
Savannah was far too immersed in her joy to notice Rose being on guard against her. She drove quickly to the hospital with her good mood in tow. It just so happened that several elders of the Anderson family were also in the ward. The elders unanimously praised her for going to Jeremiah for the matter. Tristan also deeply admired her.
Garrett and Maggie's betrothal was a matter of great significance to the Schmidts and the Lanes. After all, a marriage between two first-rate families was more than enough to stir Alexandrius. Maggie, on the other hand, was far from happy about it. The reason was simple. She did not have any feelings for Garrett. Neither of them had feelings for one another.
In this case, Maggie was her family's pawn. There was nothing she could do about it, knowing that it was a sacrifice for the sake of the family's development.
"My daughter, today is a big day. Keep the frown off your face. Your grandfather will be displeased if he sees you like this. I know you don't like Garrett, but us women, especially women born into powerful families, have our fates held by the hands of our families. This is just how it is. Garrett may like messing around, but once you marry into the Schmidt family, you will be Mrs. Schmidt, the lady of the family. You will have the right to restrain him then."
Mrs. Lane and Maggie were seated in a car together on their way to the Schmidt residence. How could a mother not know exactly what was on her daughter's mind when she was pulling such a face?
"Do you think I'll be happy after I marry into the Schmidt family, Mom?" Maggie was in her early twenties with a thin figure. She was not the most dazzling of specimens, but she was still an uncommon sort of beauty. She wore a black dress that accentuated her porcelain skin. Mrs. Lane sighed. The Heavens are fair to all. There would always inevitably be something that would be taken away once a woman enters a superior position. Women born into prestige had no happiness to speak of. They had no right to pursue the said happiness as well.
The entirety of the Lane family left their residence in droves for the engagement party at the Schmidt residence. They were gathered into six luxury cars, the worst performing of which was at least a Mercedes Benz E-Klasse. They were greeted by those arranged by the Schmidts upon arriving at the foot of the mountain that housed the Schmidt residence. Rose, who was at the forefront of the current generation of the Schmidt family, was one of them.
The vehicles that ferried the Lanes came to a halt once they caught sight of the Schmidt family. An old man, barely seventy, alighted from one of the vehicles up front. He looked fit as a fiddle with an energetic touch to his face and ash gray hair. He seemed to have a particularly tough frame. He was Maggie's grandfather, Spencer Lane.
"My grandfather sent me to greet everyone, Mr. Lane. You must've had a difficult journey," Rose walked up to Spencer and said politely.
"Your grandfather is most gracious. The Lanes and the Schmidts are now a family There's no need for all this fanfare." Spencer chuckled with great appreciation. "I believe we last met two years ago. You were still a little girl back then. You've grown up to not only be beautiful but also far more capable than your peers. The Schmidts are lucky to have you. Haha!" Rose smiled humbly. "You flatter me, Mr. Lane. When it comes to the leading youths of this generation, the Lanes are second to none."
"You're quite the eloquent young woman. Come, let's chat. I haven't been visiting the Schmidts for a long time. Haha!"
Seeing Spencer get out of the car, the rest of the Lanes followed suit. The relationship between the Schmidts and the Lanes were amicable, but the youngsters of the two families did not have much contact with one another. Few would visit the Schmidts. Many from the Lane family were shocked to see the Schmidt residence built so grandly.
"Mag, are you seeing this? You'll be the woman who owns all of this from today onward. I'm so jealous," a girl younger than Maggie said with a smile.
Even though the Schmidts' assets were worth billions, Maggie remained unmoved. She glanced at the one who spoke and said, "If you like it so much, Annette, you can go ahead and marry Garrett in my stead."
Annette meant to give Maggie her sincere congratulations, but she did not expect the latter to refuse it. A trace of embarrassment soon appeared on her face.
Mrs. Lane cut in, "Maggie, how could you speak to Annette that way? Where are your manners? Did I not teach you to be better?"
Maggie pouted.
Annette laughed it off. "Mag has always been straightforward. I like her this way. It's all right." The Schmidts had been kept busy in the past few days in preparation for Maggie and Garrett's engagement. Lights and decorations littered the massive manor to create a festive atmosphere. The Schmidt residence began to fill up by noon. Nearly half of the Capital City's celebrities were present, which showed just how influential the Schmidts and the Lanes were.
Layla was nursing a glass of red wine and standing amongst a small crowd of men and women. As usual, she was dressed in her denims paired with a plaid jacket. Her wavy long hair was draped over her shoulders, exuding the charm of a mature woman that radiated a hint of wildness. There were several beautiful women near her, and yet they seemed to fade in the background with Layla in sight.
That was when a handsome man in his thirties approached her with a glass filled with red wine. "I didn't expect to see you here, Layla. What a coincidence."
