Nicholas froze as the intense fire in his eyes slowly faded. With a wave of his hands, all of the attendants around us immediately left. the luxurious room, leaving the two of us alone.

Once he saw me sign the papers, Nicholas stood up and turned me. around to face him. He looked at me with a dark gaze. Even if both of us were to remain quiet, I felt like our souls were resonating with

each other.

Our souls were tightly intertwined and indiscernible from each other. It was almost as if even after so many years of being with him, despite it being with or without love, we still had a bond between us.

The strong sensation of happiness overwhelmed me as I felt myself. grow dizzy.

He placed his hand on the top of my head and began stroking my hair. “Mrs. Hawk, are you still keeping your hair long for me?”

My lips twitched, not understanding where he was getting at.

“You gave up everything to stay by my side. How could I not treat you well?‘ He stroked my hair softly as his voice was filled with adoration. “Am I such an irresponsible man in your heart?

“I don’t need to hear your answer. You are with me every day as your hair grows longer. Mrs. Hawk, even your hair is living proof of your love for me. You do love me. You can’t trick me.”

He sounded so sure as his voice was filled with confidence. Was that really what Nicholas believed about me?

I knew better than anyone the reason why I had decided to return to his side. It would be a lie if I were to say there weren’t any

calculations on my part. If I were being honest, I felt like I wasn’t as good as I used to be

Just because Nicholas had hurt me I felt justified in deceiving him and playing with his feelings. But now, I only felt ignited by his burning passion.

I had disrupted his life, yet I was only thinking about how I should. leave unscathed. How was I any different from the person he used to be? I had become a bad woman who played with people’s feelings.

I was not supposed to act like that! My teachers never taught me to act in such a way! If it weren’t for the fact that Nicholas was still hugging me, I would have fallen to the ground in despair.

Feeling lost, I found my voice as I looked up at him. “Do y–you like

me?”

I don’t know how many times I had asked him that question. Each time I asked, I would only end up feeling humiliated. If his answer was different from those previous times, I would-

“I do!” Nicholas said without hesitation, disrupting my thought. process. “Why would I be so nice to you if I didn’t like you?”

My eyes turned red, while he kissed the corner of my eyes. He looked at me with love and sympathy as he said, “You are the biggest surprise in my life.”

If he had said those words to me back then, I would have teased him or even raised his chin and said, “Mr. Hawk, do you know that it’s cheating to say such sweet words?”

But now, his calm and casual confession had made me feel like my dreams had come true. I reached out to pinch his neck.

The second he frowned, I immediately wrapped my arms around his neck and said, guiltily, “Nicholas, a–actually 1-1-”

Since his answer was different than before, then perhaps it was time. for us to let go of everything between us.

He had played me once, and I had played him once in return. It was about time we called it even between us.

After things were even, I would accept everything that happened later. Whether he was angry at me or if he chose to forgive me, I’d leave it up to fate.
