Chapter Eight

One evening, as I was having dinner, Mason stormed in, demanding to know what I had done to Erica.

“Ever since Erica came back from seeing you, she hasn’t eaten or drunk anything and is so agitated that she keeps pushing me away. She’s on the brink of death, and yet you still won’t let her go.

Do you need her to die in front of you to be satisfied?”

I couldn’t take it anymore and slapped him hard across the face. The sound echoed through the room as Mason’s cheek turned red and swollen.

“File for divorce immediately. I can’t wait any longer. Every moment I spend with you makes me fear I might end up killing you.”

Mason, never having suffered such humiliation, gripped me tightly and spat venomous words, “Ulrica, what are you so proud of? If my Rica were okay, there would be no place for you.”

I scoffed, “You think too highly of yourself. If you love each other so much, then stay together and stop tormenting others. Good riddance.”

Realizing his outrageous words, Mason slapped himself and tried to grab my hand.

“Don’t touch me. I find it disgusting.”

Just as he was about to explain, lan arrived and threw him out.

The thirty–day cooling–off period passed quickly.

While I was busy preparing the divorce documents, Mason declared that he would not give up on the baby. Using his connections, he insisted on fighting for custody.

Driven by their own interests, Mason’s parents remained silent, clearly wanting their grandson as well. They forced me into a legal battle.

In court, I presented numerous intimate photos of Mason and Erica. In these, they were smiling at each other, whispering secrets, with their heads close together, looking at the same phone screen, exuding intimacy.

“It’s just a matter of perspective. Erica and I are just friends. As a heart patient, it’s normal for

me to visit her,” Mason argued weakly, but no one believed him. The ambiguous relationship was clear to all.

I then presented the hospital timeline, clearly showing how Mason neglected me and our child, spending most of his time with Erica, entertaining and comforting her.

Mason’s disgrace was evident to everyone.

Given that the civil code favors mothers for children under two, and considering Mason’s faults, the court ruled in my favor.

Mason lost the case miserably. I was granted full custody of our son, with Mason ordered to pay five thousand yuan monthly for child support. I also received half of his assets.

Finally, Mason and I were divorced, and I became a single, wealthy woman.

As I left the courtroom, Mason’s mother stopped me and handed me a bank card and a property deed. Her eyes were bloodshot, showing her own suffering.

“Child, don’t blame us. Your father and I just couldn’t bear to lose our grandson. There are two million in this account, and the house is in the city center. This is our compensation for you and the baby. Please don’t refuse. If you ever need anything, let us know.”

“Thank you, Auntie. I appreciate it on behalf of the baby.”

My mother had liked Mason so much because his parents were reasonable and upright.

“Ulrica, I failed you,” Mason, unshaven and guilt–ridden, approached me.

“I don’t accept your so–called apology. This is the end for us. Goodbye.”

I waved him off and walked out of the court with

lan.
