Chapter 0100

Cara's POV

The surprise of the voice completely shattered the moment that had been occurring between Alaric and I.

Snapping from my gaze, I turned in the direction of the voice. As more words rang out, I started to recognize the identity of the speaker

"You and your rude, arrogant child should be ashamed of yourselves!! There is no excuse for that horrendous display, that despicable scene caused by your son!"

It's Matthew Bedford, come to get the last word.

He keeps going, continuing his barrage of harsh words and angry condemnation of my family. "You royals think you can walk all over anyone deemed beneath you! How dare you?!"

I raise an eyebrow at him as he approaches closer. I know men like this very well, too well in fact. They just want to cause a disturbance, want to watch someone else get as angry and upset as they themselves feel inside.

I have enough experience with this type of man to know that all I have to do is simply let his tantrum play out. He'll lose energy soon enough, and then he'll be on his convinced that the world has been turned against him. I just have to ignore him, and he will go away, like a furious flying insect.

way, ever

But as he steps even closer to me, I'm shocked to see his face fall, like his grand speech about my family's lack of respect has been interrupted.

He's staring directly at my face with wide eyes, and his mouth is caught in the shape of an "O" with no words coming out.

His stare continues for a moment longer before a smooth and charming grin replaces the surprised expression. He brushes a hand through his blond hair and reaches a hand towards me.

"I don't believe I've had the pleasure to meet you, gorgeous," he says with a wink, holding out his hand to take my own.

I'm confused by his quick change of attitude towards me but place my hand in his out of sheer politeness. "Cara," I say to him, introducing myself.

"Matthew Bedford," he says smoothly. "Where have those Auburns been hiding such a beautiful and lovely princess?"

I stare at him, not wanting to encourage this poor excuse for flirtation. I've heard so many

horrible things about this man and his family, there's no chance that I would entertain a romance with the likes of him!

Alaric clears his throat behind me, deliberately alerting Matthew Bedford to his presence.

Matthew, undeterred by Alaric, keeps holding onto my hand, reaching down to place a soft kiss on the back of it. He completely ignores Alaric's noise, pretending his hasn't seen the Alpha King yet.

I pull it back hard, wiping my hand on the side of my shirt.

Alaric clears his throat again, harder this time.

"If that cough keeps up much more, you should probably go see a doctor!" I hear my brother Ryan call out to Alaric sarcastically.

Ethan is at Ryan's side, holding his champion trophy and looking absolutely exhausted.

Alaric jumps back, stepping about two feet further away from me as my brother and son approach.

Matthew Bedford takes the opportunity to move even closer to me, placing something in the palm of my hand. He leans into my hair, sniffing loudly at my scent before whispering into my ear, "If you ever need anything, give me a call and I'll fulfill your wildest dreams." After that, Bedford thankfully walks away. I look down to see what he has given me and see it's a small piece of paper. I unfold it and see that he has written his personal phone number.

I close my fist, crumpling the paper into a ball. There is zero chance I would ever call him.

I look over my shoulder and see Alaric slinking away into the shadows. I wave to him, which he returns silently before vanishing from sight around a corner.

"I thought you were going out to celebrate?" I ask my brother Ryan.

"Change of plans. Our champion little Ethan here said he's too tired and just wants to go home. Ruby found an old colleague in the crowd and is going out with them to catch up. She said she'll see you at home later," Ryan replies.

I help Ethan get buckled into the car, trophy nestled in his lap safely between his legs. I barely pull the car out of the parking spot when I look back and see both of my children fast asleep in the backseat.

'Are you sure you don't want me to drive? It's been a long day for everyone," Ryan offers to me gently.

"That's very kind, but I'm okay. I like driving... it helps me to clear my mind," I reply, turning onto the main road.

www.

We drive like this in comfortable silence for a short time, before Ryan speaks up again. "Cara, I know that my brothers and I can be a litle overprotective of you..." Ryan begins.

1 laugh with a snort and raise an eyebrow at him. "A little overprotective?" I ask sarcastically.

"Okay, okay, maybe sometimes a lot overprotective. But I want you to know, I'm sorry if I've ever upset you by how I've acted. I do trust you, truly," Ryan's voice was so full of sincerity that I was momentarily too shocked to speak. "Thank you, Ryan. I really appreciate that," I finally say, finding my voice.

"I mean it. You're a good person, and an exceptional leader. You're so different from the sister I grew up with... Lilia, I mean," Ryan's voice trails off, as if he's caught in a memory of a childhood with that cold and entitled Lilia. I can't imagine what it must have been like for my brothers, always doting on the demanding princess. I wish I could have been there for them during that time.

But fate had another plan in store for all of us.

"You always know the best course of action," Ryan said wistfully.

"Well, maybe not always-"I interrupt. I second guess myself all the time, always worried that I'm not doing enough, or not performing my best. It's not modesty, it's just truth that no one can always know the right way to proceed.... "Okay, but the vast majority of the time. You have a good head on your shoulders, sis. You should be proud of that, Goddess knows we're all proud of you for it," he says with a smile.

I feel myself blushing, honored by his kind words.

"Thank you, Ryan. What's gotten into you tonight? You don't normally offer compliments this freely!" I reply to him, using humor to try to understand what he's getting at.

"I'm just saying, I support any choices you make, even if our other brothers don't," Ryan says vaguely.

"What do you mean? What choices are you talking about?" I'm even more curious now. He can't be saying all of this out of nowhere... he's got to have a reason....

"You know... like with Alaric. It's none of our business, I know, but if you decide to get back. with him again, I'm just saying I wouldn't question your decision about that," Ryan says looking at me. What?
