Raging Barons – Silver: Chapter 5
-:- SILVER -:-
Stomping into the club this morning, I cannot say I’m a happy man. I hate doing interviews, but I’d agreed I would do them with Mia this morning.
Switching on the set of lights we use when we are cleaning, stocking or holding meetings, the place lights up and looks pretty stark after seeing the club’s night lights coloring the place.
Looking around, I can see nothing is amiss in the bar and club area. I look into the new kitchen and have to say I’m still pretty impressed it came together so well. Then I head to the small kitchen that the staff use, make myself a drink and go into the office, where I check if we have any mail I need to complete from yesterday.
Calling one of our suppliers, I pay the bill and place the invoice in the book I keep for TwoCents our treasurer. Thankfully, he can keep up with all the stuff I throw in the book because I don’t know about any kind of bookkeeping.
I hear the back door open, and Mia calls to let me know she’s arrived. I also hear Hammer talking, he seems to be her right arm these days, and it’s rare you see one without the other, and I have to grin as Hammer spends more time with Mia than Axel, much to Axel’s disgust.
Mia walks into the office and throws herself into the easy chair, gives me one of her bright smiles, then frowns when I don’t return it.
“What’s wrong with you, Silver?” she asks, leaning forward to give me a good look, “You look like you saw your own butt and didn’t like the look of it.”
Hammer guffaws, leaning against the door frame, shaking his head at Mia’s description.
“I’m not happy I’ve got to do these fucking interviews; you know it’s not my thing. I’m not a people person, so how am I going to put them at ease? Can’t you do it Hammer?” I’m giving him a pleading look, which I can see is getting me nowhere.
“Awe come on Silver, it’s your club, so you need to see who you’ll be working with and all four of these have been recommended so we know they are good, even before we start speaking to them.” Mia leans back again in her chair and gives me a smirk.
Hammer grins. “I’m going to put the coffee pot on. It’s a good kitchen Silver, I’m looking forward to seeing it in action.”
“I’ll have one, Hams.” Mia says in her sweet voice to him, and I cannot help but roll my eyes at her.
“Come on, let’s go set up in the club, ready for the first one to arrive. Who’s the first on your list for us to see?” I ask as we walk through to the club and sit at the table near the bar.
Once we are settled and Hammer has brought our drinks, Mia picks up her pen and starts writing something. Turning to me, she asks, “Are you happy with Carol, Twig, and Sue? If not, now is the time to replace them.”
I’m taken by surprise a little, as I hadn’t given them a thought regarding them not coming back to work.
“They are good women; they do the job. I’ve never had trouble with any of them, so I don’t see the need to replace them. We do need two new ones if we can get them.” I state, finishing my drink and rubbing the back of my neck, as this interviewing is just not my cup of tea.
Mia looks up to speak, but the front door opening has us both looking over at the woman entering. She’s about 5’ 2”, dark brown hair which is shoulder length, put back in a ponytail, about a size 8 I would think. So, not a walking skeleton. She’s damn stunning and has my interest right from the get-go.
Mia pats my thigh under the table to get my attention and grins at me, then turns to the young woman, “Hi Eden, is it?” she asks and beckons her to the seat on the opposite side of our table.
“Yes, I’m Eden Hollaway and I’m here for an interview for the bartender or waitress position. I don’t mind either, I was doing a combination of both at the last place I worked.” She states calmly. She has a warm rich voice that has goosebumps raising on my arms.
Mia continues, while I sit here, probably looking like a fucking moron. “Can you tell us why you left your last employment? Give us any details you think we need to hear.” Mia asks.
“I actually loved my job. I worked the bar three nights a week and served drinks to tables on three other nights. The bar wasn’t really doing so well because the owner wasn’t putting anything back into the business. It had gotten shabby, and the locals were being run off by a young bullying crowd. Many moved to another bar in the town, so the owner eventually called it a day and closed. So now here I am looking for alternative employment.” Eden told us this calmly and with a saddened tone, which I don’t think Mia missed at all.
“If you got the job here, which, would you prefer to do, the bar tending or the waitressing?” I ask.
“I don’t mind either. I enjoy working with people so I’m okay to do either. I’m good to step into either role if or when needed.” Eden is nervously gripping her hands together I notice.
Hammer walks through from the kitchen and gives Eden a huge smile and wink, which has a blush rush up her neck and into her face. He chuckles at the reaction, then places his hand on Mia’s shoulder. “Do you want me to do the security check on Eden before you go any further?”
Mia nods and smiles, “Yes please, Hams. Is that okay with you, Eden?”
“Of course, here is my ID.”
Hammer takes the ID and walks through to the office down the hall behind the bar. I know he’s going to contact Specs to do a quick check. He knows he’s needed this morning for this, so he’ll be sitting at the ready.
“You’ve made the place look good. I came once with an old friend and it was okay then, but it’s lovely now you’ve renovated.” Eden says, giving us a small smile.
Mia sits forward, leaning her elbows on the table, “We’re going to serve basket meals too. I think that’ll be successful.”
“Oh really, that is a good idea, fried chicken in a basket, yeah I can see that going well. Oh, you could do hot dogs and chunky fries, chicken wings, burgers, fries and onion rings, so many possibilities.” That’s when Eden’s stomach makes the largest growl I’ve ever heard. “Oh, sorry, the thought of all that food has my stomach asking for breakfast. I only had a meal bar this morning.”
Mia bursts out laughing and I cannot hold back the chuckle either, “Well, we’ll make you the official taste tester because your stomach seems to be up for the job.” I quip.
Laughing at herself, which has me admiring her more, “Yeah, I’d be up for that, or my stomach would at least.”
Hammer walks back through and gives us the nod that all is clear. He hands Eden her ID and walks back into the kitchen.
“Would you be able to start tomorrow, Eden? We are not officially open tomorrow, but we need to get supplies put away in the kitchen and restock the bar area.” Mia asks her before I can get the words out. Mia takes her through the salary and health benefits we supply before she gets Eden’s answer to the question.
“Yes, I can start as soon as you need me.” Eden smiles, and it’s a huge smile that has her looking from stunning to full on beautiful. Her brown eyes are sparkling with life. She really takes my breath away.
“Okay then Eden, you start tomorrow at 11:00 sharp. We’ll be working in the kitchen and bar area, setting up getting ready for opening day. You do a five-day week, with Monday and Tuesday off.” I state, then stand, holding my hand out to shake.
Eden sticks her hand into mine and excitedly pumps my hand up and down, then grabs Mia’s doing the same and she has this infectious smile on her face, that has both myself and Mia smiling broadly back at her.
We next interview and employ Linda Carter who is a tall woman, 5’ 8” I would think, and of mixed heritage, beautiful black hair she has braided on top and tied at her nape, she is stick thin but you can see that is how she’s made not that she’s a diet fanatic. She has a bubbly personality and I like her and think she’ll be a wonderful asset. She’ll work three nights, Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
Fiona Snow is 55 years old, wants unskilled work and is happy to work as many hours as she is given. She’s a widow with a daughter who’s moved to Australia with her husband and daughter, so Fiona is alone apart from a couple of friends. She’s a quiet woman, but you can tell once she gets to know you, she’ll come out of her shell. Fiona is good for any kind of kitchen work, filling the dishwasher to mopping floors. She’ll start as soon as the cook does because we want them to get a good relationship going.
Tony Smithers, a large man, 6’ 2” at a guess, 42 years of age, bald, large around the middle, but the entire demeanor of the man is jovial. He’s looking for work as he left his last job when he moved here six weeks ago. He divorced his wife, who he found cheating with none other than, you guessed it, his best friend. He has purchased property here and is ready to start as soon as we need him.
Mia walks him through ideas for basket meals to be served and between them they devise a menu. Tony gives estimates of what fresh food would be needed at any given time, and he’s happy to do research into suppliers to get us the best deals for what we need. He is no fool, and will take no shit. I like him and I think he’ll fit in perfectly.
After Tony left with the understanding, he’ll be here tomorrow by 12:00 to create a couple of basket meals for us to try out. He shakes hands and walks out, looking pretty happy with himself.
Turning to Mia, I smile, “Well, that wasn’t as bad as I expected. Shit, girl, you can interview.”
Mia laughs, pats my shoulder, then shouts for Hammer that she’s ready to move on to their next job.
Looking at her with a raised eyebrow questioningly, she grins again, then responds, “We are going to look at a garage I’ve heard about. It’ll be ideal for the custom car idea that Dice had. We also have to get some mechanics for the garage still, but so far, the people that we’ve seen were useless and we’re not carrying assholes. We need people that will be good at what they do and help build an excellent reputation. Jenkins was good, but he’d lost some customers because of his health being bad and not completing his work on time.”
“I’m sure you’ll find the people you need, Mia. You have a gift for these things, I’m sure.” I state, then grin as she blushes a dark pink.
“What are you doing to our girl here, Silver?” Hammer laughs, then places his arm around her shoulders and guides her out, laughing together as they go.
I lock up the front door, then head back to the office to clear up more paperwork. I’ve no idea what’s happened to Fox. He’s supposed to be joint manager but seems to be here less and less. Asshole, I’ll be speaking to him as soon as I catch up with his ass.
