Chapter 6. Polar Bear
I decided to take a nap to kill some time.
I heard chairs moving and voices mumbling around but I didn't pay it any mind. This nap was so much better than last night's one.
I felt someone poking my arm in an attempt to wake me but I grumbled and shook them off.
They proceeded to poke my arm though.
"Five more minutes." I mumbled.
"Elena if you don't get up, I'll wake you myself and trust me, you do not want that." Mason said to me with a monotone voice.
That my friend, was my queue to get up.
I lift my head to find an amused looking Mason staring back at me. I avoided trying to look deep in his eyes again because I rather not pass out another day.
"Why did you wake me you jerk?" I asked him.
"Fine, go back to sleep. I'll let Mr. Baker himself wake you and give you a detention for sleeping in his class." He rolled his eyes and turned away from me.
Who's he getting annoyed at. I didn't tell him to wake me. Why did he even care whether or not I got a detention. This guy had me confused for yet another day.
"Jeesh, you are so bi polar. I'm gonna call you Pbear. Shortening for polar bear." I told him sporting a cheeky smile.
He turned to face me slowly with a scowl on his face. "Don't you ever, and I mean EVER, call me that." Mason told me in a deep threatening voice.
First he was smiling and then a second later, he's annoyed and then another second, he's making threats.
I looked at him pursing my lips and cocking my head to the side, trying to hide the fact that he scared me. Well, he did and he didn't. I mean I doubt he would hurt me because I know he cared. He cared because he managed to take me to the nurse's office and asked if I was going to be okay.
"Don't look at me like that." Mason said furrowing his eye brows.
"How am I looking at you Mason?" I asked him saying the words as so slow as possible as if I were talking to an infant.
He clenched his fist like he was restraining himself but I ignored him.
"I hate you Elena. So please refrain from talking to me ever again." He said in blatantly before turning to face the teacher who happened to walk in 10minutes late for class.
It kind of hurt the way Mason said that he hated me. Half of me believed him, while the other half, not so much.
Why does he hate me though. I haven't done anything to him that was life threatening.
I didn't reply to what he said because the teacher had start giving out instructions and also, I didn't have a sarcastic comment in my bone to reply with.
Mr. Baker told us to pair up in groups of two. Some students went ahead to sit with their partner, who was also their friend but Mr Baker laughed at them and told them that he would be the one doing the pairing up.
He started to call names and deep down I wished that I wasn't going to be paired with Mason.
"Ms Maguire.....you'll be paired with Ms Jackson." He said to me
Who the hell is Jackson. I looked around the class to find a pair of blue eyes dancing back at me. I assumed it was her so I got up and went over to sit beside her.
"Hi Chloe." I sighed.
"Hi Elena. How are you? Isn't it great that we're partners? I know you must be wondering why i'm even talking to you when you were so rude to me yesterday but I forgive you. It was your first day after all. I think you're probably over it, so we can be friends now, if that's okay with you" she said in one breath. I forgot how friendly she is.
I thought it over and I decided it would be good having a friend here. I sensed before that she was a very genuine person so I knew I could trust her. Besides, her happy to go personality was contagious.
"Sure. We can be friends." I told her with a genuine smile of my own.
She returned a toothy smile.
Mr Baker finished pairing and started to give out instructions about the experiment we would be doing.
Mason got paired with some brunette who batted her eyelashes at him, chatting away. He seemed bored by her and that was somewhat comforting.
I remember doing this same experiment back at my old school so I took control letting Chloe get her input on it now and again.
She asked me loads amount of question about myself, like where i'm from, why did I move here, where do I buy my clothes....all that.
The clothes part really caught me because I love fashion. It seems she does too and I could tell that this was the start of a new and prospering friendship.
Don't get me wrong, no one, and I mean no one can replace Shira.
I think i'll skype her later and update her about what's happening. Mostly about Mason.
I had Biology next and Chloe happened to be in that class with me as well. I was happy about that because it gave me a chance to know more about her.
It was now lunch period and Chloe told me to sit with her and her friends. I accepted the offer because I did not want to spend another day having lunch in my car.
"Hey you're that girl who had the nerve to sit with Mason yesterday at lunch." One of Chloe's friends said to me. I think his name was Evan. I sensed that he was a pretty straightforward guy but also a guy who has a big heart. I liked him already.
"Yup that's me." I said slightly embarrassed.
"You are one brave chihuahua." Evan giggled.
I took that as a chance to know more about Mason.
"What's up with Mason though? Why is he like that?" I asked them.
"Well, they are a lot if rumors about him but the only one I actually believe is that his parents died in a house fire and that scarred him for life. That's why he's so standoffish with everyone. He doesn't want to get too close to anyone in fear, their going to leave him behind like his parents did." A girl who I remember named Cynthia said to me while examining her nails. She then muttered something about getting a manicure.
"That's not true. I heard he does illegal boxing at night and he doesn't keep too much people around him in fear they will betray him and report him to the police." Evan stated.
"Well I think, he's been through a lot in the past and that's why he is the way he is." Chloe said as a matter if fact.
I thought the same exact thing to what Chloe said. That made me look into her eyes deeply. I know I shouldn't but I could try.
Nothing. I see nothing.
What the hell.
Oh well maybe its these new contacts I have in that's preventing me from doing so.
Mason walked in the cafeteria then with a guy who I have not seen before.
"Who's that guy with Mason?" I asked my new friends.
"Oh that's Mason's best friend Jake. He's more approachable than Mason." Cynthia told me.
I looked at the Jake guy and I must say he's hot. But not Mason hot. Not that Mason is but....yh. Whatever.
Jake had dark brown hair like Mason but he had his combed back at the front. From standing here I also saw that he had chocolate brown colored eyes. Yummy.
The other thing I realized was that he said hey to almost everyone. He seemed to be quite popular but not the stereotype popular. He actually spoke to other people who weren't at the top of the social hierarchy as him and Mason.
The other thing I noticed was his smile. Jake's smile could make a girl like me swoon.
I felt this gravitational pull from him and I immediately made a decision.
I was going to befriend the two most popular guys in this school.
Starting with Jake because he seemed much more friendlier than Mason.
"He's cute isn't he?" Chloe whispered in my ear saying.
"Most definitely." I responded with a cheeky smile.
