Chapter Chapter XVII

I was conscious but I wasn’t, it was like my mind was awake but my body just limp or lifeless. I wasn’t dead, I knew that much but I felt like I should’ve been. Sirens blew loudly in my ears and my eyelids were dragged back as bright lights were pointed into my eyes. Voices were speaking on either side of me and it felt like I was being chucked around even though I couldn’t feel a thing. At some point we moved to somewhere bright white, the walls, the ceilings and even the people were all dressed in white. The lights shone brightly like the sun as I was wheeled down towards a room with another smaller sun. My eyelids were shielding the intensity and I was calmed by that, until people started jabbing needles into my arms, I could feel those.

I felt a numbness spreading throughout my body as a liquid flowed through me and not long after my senses gave out and I was stuck in my own dark mind again ready to be haunted by anything and everything that was going to be thrown my way.

“She’s been out for two weeks now, I can’t handle it anymore.” I heard a voice say loudly in exasperation.

“I know Claire, but there’s nothing we can do for her at this present moment. You’ll just have to wait until she is ready to wake up. Whenever that is.”

“You talk as if she won’t wake up Seth!”

“I never said that, you just need to hope and wait.” Someone started crying and I thought that’d be a perfect time to make my presence known. I just felt like moving my fingers to comfort the person and before long my eyes peeled themselves open. I heard a gasp and turned my head to the side, Seth, Claire, Cameron, Michael and Pete were all there with tears in their eyes. Water started to fall down my face and I sighed in happiness and a bit of pain as I was jumped on by Claire. “Watch it Claire,” Seth said loudly, trying to keep his cool as though not to trample the moment. “She may be a little better but she’s not healed completely yet. Don’t go jumping on her.”

“I’ll do whatever I please with my best friend slash sister thank you very much sir.” I smiled at their bickering and how close they’d obviously gotten over this as Claire continued to hug the rest of the life out of me. I tapped Claire on the shoulder and pointed towards the glass of water on the table, “Oh of course, your throat would be as dry as the Sahara desert.” I internally giggled and took the glass of water greedily gulping down all of it. “Where did Pete go?” I asked hoarsely, not realising he’d slipped out during our reunion.

“He went to get one of the nurses so they can do a check up on how you’re doing since you’ve been in a coma for two weeks.” I shook my head at her.

“I can’t believe it’s been two weeks, how are all of you? Michael, Cameron?” I asked looking them over thoroughly. I could feel my royal side kicking in and my mind trying to remember everything that happened. Just as Claire was about to reply Pete walked back in with the doctor and a nurse in tow. Claire scrambled off me as if she was about to get in trouble and everyone headed back to their respected seats as the doctor came and stood beside me.

“Hello Bella, my name is Dr. Adrian. I have a few questions I’d like you to answer, simply just to make sure your memory is functioning fine and it’s okay if you can’t answer all of them, just take your time.” He paused and looked through his clipboard and selected a particular page pulling it out and placing it on top of all the others.

“To start of with do you remember your age?”

“I’m 17.”

“Good. Now how about what day it is today including the month?”

“The fourth of July, since I’ve been in a coma for two weeks apparently.”

“Yes that’s correct,” he nodded looking once again at his clipboard

“I have two more questions for you but before I ask this one, does everyone in here know who you are?” My stomach plummeted, obviously I couldn’t use my fake name, this was a medical exam. I had to be honest. “Only those two don’t know as far as I’m concerned.” I said pointing towards Seth and Cameron.

Pete, Seth and Claire all laughed, “What?”

“I think it’s time I told you Bella that Pete picked me to be your body guard at school.”

“I’m sorry what?” I looked at him baffled, he was the perfect choice and I had no faults or questions about it. So I just looked towards Cameron.

“Well I guess it’s just this one then, but I think it’s time he found out anyway, you’re welcome to ask the the question doctor.” Cameron was looking at me with such intensity he was burning a hole in the side of my head. I knew he was curious but he was about to find out anyway.

“What is your full name?”

“Princess Isabella Roslein Marie Evans.” I heard a chair screech and before I could even explain to him his back was heading down the hallway. “I’ll go speak to him Princess.”

“None of that Seth, just Bella to you and thank you, I appreciate it.” I sighed and turned back to the doctor, “Will there be anything else for today?”

“I’d also like to ask if you remember the incident?”

“I do. I don’t want to though.”

“That’s no worries at all then, when you feel like talking to someone about it I’ll have the report written up. I also have to do a few blood tests, maybe a few scans to see how your operation is holding up inside the body and just some general checkups on your broken bones and cuts. It’s only early in the morning so it all should be done by afternoon. I’d like to keep you here for another two days just for observation reasons and then you should be free to go. Your family can stay till visiting hours are over.”

“Sounds good to me Doctor.”

“Alright, then we’ll get started right away Princess.”

My entire day was filled with bright lights, going through scanning tunnels, x-rays, ultrasounds and MRI’s. I’d almost had enough by the time it came to tending my wounds and cuts again and re-wrapping them with more gauze and bandages. I really was a mess when I looked at myself in the mirror to go to the toilet at some point.

I had a broken arm and a broken leg, broken ankle and wrist. I had whiplash from the impact of the car and a lot of my cuts were from metal and glass flying into my body. The doctor said I’d been lucky to have no brain damage or memory loss. The surgery I’d had was because a piece of metal from the car door had lodged itself into the right side of my body, although it narrowly missed any important parts inside the body.

I was relieved I wasn’t dead but the whole incident had me wondering who, how and why it happened. Hoping Claire was on top of it. I left it out of my mind for the moment.

Another two hours later and I was finally back in my room, the last they were doing was administering more pain killers to my happiness. There was an hour left of visiting time and I wanted to make the most of it. Cameron still wasn’t back so I hoped Seth was controlling that situation.

“Claire, do we know what happened exactly yet?”

“Nothing other then the fact that the blue sedan that hit us has indeed followed us before, the day after we went shopping and got ice cream. The day we found the note on your balcony.”

“Do you really think it’s him?”

“It has to be Bella, I can’t think of anyone else it could be.”

“Well we’ll have to keep doubling the patrols as we were, inside and outside. No one goes in or out unless I know about it. I’m going to have three people with me at all times whether it be you, Seth and an agent, or just three agents. I have four months until my birthday and until I graduate, then coronation. I just have to get through the rest of the year."

The doctor walked in as we finished our conversation and everyone said their goodbye’s kissing me on the forehead before leaving and giving me hugs even though my body was complaining so badly of the pain I didn’t listen. I loved them all so much.

“Doctor, a request please? Could I possibly have my best friend here to sleep with me. I have night terrors and it would help if she was here.”

“Of course Princess. But only her and two bodyguards, I don’t need the place cramped up.”

“No of course doctor, thank you.”

Claire walked back in and sat down in the chair beside me. “I’m glad I bought my phone charger and a book or I’d die here sitting beside you. I’d have nothing to do.” She laughed. I laughed with her and grabbed her hand totally content at the moment with the people I had in my life.

Two days passed quicker then I expected considering the drugs helped me sleep pain free most of the time. No night terrors came either thanks to that and I jokingly had to ask the doctor if I could take some home with me before I left.

“Ready to go home Princess?”

“Yes doctor, I’ve never been so excited for my own bed in my entire life.”

“Well lets go then.” Claire pronounced and before long we were in the car and travelling home. I slept most of the way and was prodded awake as soon as I got there. “Ow excuse me, fragile packaging here thank you.” Claire just laughed at me and pointed towards the door where Cameron was waiting with his arms crossed. “He’s still not happy with me is he?”

“Nope.” Claire said in a sing song voice. She grabbed the wheelchair out from the back and wheeled it round to me where I hoped in from the car with Michael’s help.

I wheeled myself to Cameron, “Can we talk in the lounge room?” All I got was a nod and Claire came up beside me to help me up the stairs. “Looks like we’re going to have to put in a ramp for you miss.” I giggled at her.

Wheeling in the door I’d realised how much I’d actually missed this place. Although Pete was right in my face giving me a hug before I could even process it, “It’s good to have you home Isabella.”

“It’s good to be home. Now I have to go talk to a certain grumpy bum who’s still mad at me.”

“Be nice.” He warned.

“Aren’t I always.” I chucked over my shoulder as I rolled towards the downstairs lounge room. There was Cameron waiting for me on the couch watching some weird TV show that was on. I cleared my throat and his stormy grey eyes pierced into mine.

He went to speak but I put a hand up to stop him, “First of all I want to tell you why you were never told about who I was from Claire, Seth or I. In the beginning it was just Claire that knew and I wanted to keep it that way. A Princess makes enemies, so does her family and being Royal isn’t all fun and games. A lot of the time it’s very dangerous. When Pete told me he wanted to drag a body guard from the football team at school in to protect me, I gave him a list of names, but you weren’t one of them. Simply because we weren’t friends at the time. I didn’t agree with him dragging another person into this anyway, it’s a dangerous job protecting me and my family, there are things you still don’t know. This may not be enough to soothe you and explain to you why I didn’t pick you but I just simply didn’t because in the end I didn’t want you getting hurt. I’ve kept my secret from everyone except for the people closest to me. And when we got closer I was still hesitant to tell you because of your safety but I will tell you all of it, soon.” I took a deep breath since my lungs were out of air by that point.

He’d been sitting there listening quietly and I didn’t know if that was good or bad because this boy was as boisterous and loud as you can get. He simply nodded his head at me, stood up and came and stood right in front of me and my wheelchair. My heart was going erratic at this point and there were goosebumps growing on my arms, it was making underneath my casts itch.

He leaned down and put his lips close to my ear causing shivers to go down my spine, “It’s my turn to protect you now.” He said, then looked me straight in the eyes, those stormy grey swirls drew me in every time. He lifted my chin up and I thought he was going to kiss me, my stomach went into knots and I didn’t know if my breathing quickened or not but I feel like it did. He smirked at my reaction to him, kissed me on the forehead and left.

I clutched my heart before I went into cardiac arrest and prayed that I’d get through the next three months alive.
