Chapter 330
Josh, with his eagle-like presence, had been in the corporate jungle for ages, crafting a heart as tough as nails and getting used to the theater of life. It took a lot to move him these days.
But seeing Selena with tears streaming down her face, calmly asking him to reconsider, felt like his heart was caught in a grinder, being crushed to pieces.
Josh's eyes got misty too. He gently patted her hand, his voice filled with regret, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I set you up with Everett partly to look out for you, just like your granddad would have wanted, hoping it'd make you happy. I had my reasons too. If I hadn't stepped in, Everett might've ended up with that other woman. Things didn't go as planned, and you've had to bear the brunt of it, my dear girl."
Josh had always been sharp, quick on his feet, and for decades, he was the one calling the shots from high above. He never thought he'd made a wrong call, let alone admit it.
But here he was, admitting his mistake.
It was his poor decision that led to today's mess. And that's just what he knew about. Over the past few years, who knows what Selena had to go through on her own. He couldn't even begin to imagine.
His days were numbered. How could he face his old friend on the other side?
Josh took a deep breath, shut his eyes to get a grip on his emotions, and then said, "Go on, my dear. You shouldn't be crying, especially now; it might make the baby a little crybaby too. Just focus on taking care of yourself and don't stress about anything else." "I'll handle the rest."
Selena was anxious he might try something drastic again, "Grandfather..."
"Don't worry," Josh reassured her, seeing her concern, "I won't let those worries of yours come true. I just need to make things right and give you and my great-grandchild one last grand gesture."
His eyes were firm, like he'd made up his mind about something big.
Selena didn't fully get it but wanted to ask. Yet, seeing Josh signal the butler to walk her out, it was clear he didn't want to continue.
Seeing him so worn out, she swallowed the words she was about to say.
She got up to leave, reminded Josh to take care, and with the butler's help, stepped out of the room.
The plan was for the butler to take her to the hospital entrance, where Ava and the driver were waiting. But there stood Callum in the corridor, looking up at her as they emerged. He was waiting for her.
Selena figured since she needed to speak with Callum anyway, it was better to seize the moment.
"You can leave us here, butler. I've got something to discuss with Dr. Campbell," she said casually.
The butler nodded, "Of course, ma'am. Take care."
He turned and left.
Selena and Callum shared a smile, then almost simultaneously started to speak.
"You..."
"You..."
They both paused, sharing a moment of silent understanding.
A few seconds later, Callum stepped closer,

That sounded perfect.
Selena nodded.
In the sunshine, they walked along a pebbled path toward the lake, reminiscent of those times they

wandered by the lake in the countryside.
Whether it was Callum's calming presence or his easy way with people being with him always had a wayof making everything feel alright.
Finally, Callum broke the silence, "Selena, about you and Everett..."
"It's just like you see."
Four words, and it was all laid bare.
Now, there was nothing left to hide. All the messy truths and scars were out in the open.
