Chapter 315
She turned and headed deeper into the corridor.
When Everett stepped out, he thought he caught a glimpse of a shadow flitting by, but he couldn't be sure. With Margot close to her due date, he couldn't risk another blunder like before. He lengthened his stride, moving in that direction. After taking a sharp turn, Selena found herself cornered with nowhere left to run. She pressed against the wall, hands over her mouth to muffle any sound, silently hoping Everett wouldn't come her way. But those footsteps kept getting closer, each step clearer than the last.
Selena could almost feel Everett just seconds away from turning the corner, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Mr. Everett, is everything okay?" a nurse's voice suddenly broke the tension.
Everett stopped and turned to see the nurse behind him, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Was that you outside just now?"
"Yes," the nurse nodded, "I saw the monitor flashing an alert, so I hurried over. Then I saw you heading this way and thought you might be lost, so I wanted to check."
Her story made sense, easing Everett's suspicion a bit, but an uneasy feeling still lingered. After a moment, he asked, "Have you been at the front desk this whole time? Did you see anyone else come in?"
The nurse paused, then replied confidently, "Mr. Everett, it's the middle of the night. Apart from you, I haven't seen anyone else."
If there was someone, it might not even be human... she thought, shivering slightly.
Everett noticed but didn't push further, waving her back to her post while he returned to the room.
In a daze, Selena made her way downstairs and got into a taxi. As the car pulled away, the driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror. Seeing her tear-streaked face and rounded belly, he couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy. He ventured gently, "Ma'am, don't be too down. Most men aren't worth the heartache, and a guy who cheats when you're pregnant is the worst of the lot. He's not worth your tears, especially with a little one to think about." Selena wiped the tears she hadn't realized had flooded her face. "Thank you," she murmured.
What she felt wasn't so much sadness as a deep, crushing disappointment.
Time after time, she had forgiven him, given him another chance, only to hand Everett the knife to hurt her with.
His heart had always belonged to Margot; he could never let her go, yet he couldn't let go of Selena either, wanting to have it all.
Look at how he juggled it all, not missing a beat.
Selena tilted her head back slightly, taking deep breaths, refusing to shed another tear for him.
She felt foolish for ever trusting Everett's promises, for believing his feelings for her were genuine. What kind of sincerity can you expect from a man like that?
Even if he had any, it wasn't meant for her.
That night, Everett didn't come back, but Selena had stopped caring. She went back to bed, hoping for some rest, only to be jolted awake by. waves of searing pain in her belly, leaving her drenched in cold sweat.

At first, she tried to tough it out, thinking maybe it was just stress and would soon pass, but the pain only intensified, rattling her to the core.
Then she felt a warm trickle. Looking down, she saw it.
Blood...
Slowly soaking through the sheets.

Selena's eyes widened in shock. She didn't have time to worry about anything else. She grabbed her phone, instinctively pressing and holding the "1" key to dial Everett's number.
