Chapter 271
Ava's smile froze on her face as she looked at Selena with a mix of grievance and hope. "Madam..."
"Don't worry, I'll give you a raise!" Selena replied, trying to reassure her.
Everett shot a look at Selena for deliberately opposing him. Her smile was charming, her eyes crinkling with delight, and the sparkle in her dark eyes was particularly captivating.
As he observed her, his Adam's apple moved with a sensual bob. Just as desire began to stir, he remembered her current condition wasn't ideal, prompting him to hold back his thoughts. He grabbed a napkin to dab at the corners of his mouth. "Take your time with your meal. I have to get back to the office."
Selena nodded dutifully.
He had stepped out from a meeting temporarily, leaving a boardroom full of execs waiting.
Everett rose to his feet. His large hand gently ruffled her hair as he spoke in a husky voice, "Take care and get well soon. Don't keep me waiting too long."
Selena's cheeks flushed instantly, a mix of embarrassment and irritation washing over her. She tried pinching his arm, but his muscles were so firm it was like trying to squeeze a rock. Glancing at the array of supplements, Everett said, "Ava, put the rest of those away. Boil one of those pills into a broth each day for the madam."
Ava quickly responded, "Yes, sir."
"I'm off then."
He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss on Selena's lips before striding away with his long legs.
As soon as Everett was out the door, Ava's grin stretched wide. "Madam, Mr. Bennett is really starting to fuss over you. That car accident ended up being a bit of a blessing!"
Selena leaned back against the headboard, her fingertips brushing her lips where his warmth still lingered. Her heart felt like it was being filled with countless little pebbles, sending ripples out in waves. Ava arranged the flowers in a vase on the bedside table, ensuring Selena could see and smell them easily.
"Madam, should I go prepare the broth for you?" she asked, drying her hands.
Selena's fingers gently traced the bright red petals, and she felt a sweet warmth in her heart. She softly hummed in agreement.
After taking the medicine, Selena drifted into another nap. When she awoke, the sky outside was dark, dotted with stars, looking truly beautiful.
Ava was nowhere in sight. She was likely busy preparing dinner.
Maybe it was the medicine's effect, but Selena felt lighter, free from the heaviness and fatigue, and even her breathing was more effortless.
Most noticeably, the nausea and occasional sharp stomach pains had subsided.
Though she knew the pill was potent, crafted from a blend of rare herbs and concentrated into a life-saving elixir, she was stilb amazed by its effect.
For Rebecca's sake, Kathlen had indeed spared no cost.
Knock, knock-
The quiet knock at the door broke the silence.
Selena wrapped the blanket around her, sat up and tidied her clothes and hair a bit. "Come in," she said.
The door opened to reveal Dr. Callum in his white coat.
"Dr. Campbell, you're here," Selena greeted softly.
"I was making rounds and happened to pass by, so I thought I'd check on you."
Dr. Callum approached the bed, his gaze tender as he took in her improved complexion, feeling a wave of relief. "How are you feeling?"
"Much better," Selena replied with a smile.
After a moment, her dark eyes fixed earnestly on Callum. "Dr. Campbell, thank you for saving me and... my child. Thanks for keeping the child's existence a secret. I'm really grateful."
Callum wasn't surprised by her gratitude He pulled up a chair and sat down, crossing his long legs with a touch of elegance. He pondered for a few seconds before finally speaking.
