Chapter 41
Chapter 41
Even if Newman held his breath, he could still feel the medicinal fragrance in the air seeping into his skin, making his blood boil like lava.
“Hold your breath! Don’t breathe it in!” Newman shouted at Kevin.
Though Kevin didn’t get why, he took Newman’s advice and held his breath in a hurry. His mask, with its built–in filter, kept the drug’s scent from creeping up his nose.
Anna lay on the ground, her body curling inward instinctively, the waves of pain from her stomach nearly knocking her out.
She noticed the meds in her shoulder bag were smashed, their rich aroma filling the air, and she couldn’t help but crack a sly smile.
Newman figured out she was the one who drugged him, so what? Soon, the guy’s sanity would shatter, and by then, no matter if Newman wanted to take responsibility or not, she’d make sure this scandal rocked the whole town!
Anna was already dreaming about how glorious her life would be after getting tangled up with Newman.
The man’s icy gaze was hidden behind sunglasses as he stepped forward, long legs and all and kicked the shoulder bag away from Anna with a swift move.
The shattered glass from the broken vial scattered everywhere, with pieces digging into Anna’s skin.
“Ah!” Anna let out a blood–curdling scream.
Kevin, not fully aware of what Anna had done to Newman, knew she was bad news through and through! He hadn’t yet settled the score for when Anna commanded her bodyguard to push him
into the water!
Kevin went over and stomped on Anna’s face a few times.
Newman threw open the window, letting the fresh air clear the fog and confusion in his brain. He needed to get out of this place, pronto.
Newman turned back to look at Anna, who couldn’t get up off the floor.
“Kid, let’s bail.”
Kevin looked up and quickly agreed, “Okay!”
Kevin left a dark footprint on Anna’s forehead, not lingering for another fight, and dashed over to Newman.
“But how are we gonna get out of here?”
They were on the second floor, with grass below the window.

Newman, with a stone–cold face, told him, “Climb on my back.
“Okay!”
Kevin scampered onto Newman’s back like a nimble monkey. The man lifted his shirt and placed his hand, adorned with a beaded bracelet, on his Swiss Army knife at his waist.
Through his sunglasses, he looked down at Anna gasping on the ground. Anna caught sight of Newman’s hand on the knife handle.
A chilling dread suddenly crawled up from her toes, enveloping her whole body. Was Newman planning to off her?! At that moment, Anna lost the strength to scream, shaking like a hen caught in a storm.
In the end, Newman let go of the knife handle. Better not to expose the kid to a bloodbath. So, he turned his back on Anna and leapt out the window!
Kevin wrapped his arms around Newman’s neck, chin resting on the man’s broad shou
Despite layers of clothing, he felt a vast warmth enveloping him, like a towering mountain shielding him from the elements.
Kevin tightened his short, chubby arms around Newman’s neck. The man landed with Kevin on his back, got into the car, and floored it to 180.
He found it hard to breathe, his blood pounding at his veins! But he had taken Kevin out, so he had to bring him back safe and sound.
The return trip took half the time it had to get there. Finally, the car pulled into Sunny Haven in the west district.
Newman let out a sigh of relief, took off his glasses, and said to Kevin, “Time to get out.”
Kevin unbuckled, “Devil, thanks a bunch!”
The kid looked up at Newman’s tense profile. His hair was drenched, sweat sliding relentlessly
down his chiseled features.
“Devil, are you sick or something?”
Newman undid his tie and loosened the top two buttons of his shirt. Without looking at Kevin, he just said, “Head home, kid. I’m off to the east district to see a doc.”
Over at Cozy Retreat, Newman had his own medical team. He’d been drugged, and if one sedative wasn’t enough, he’d take two!
Kevin nodded and both stepped out of the car. Newman had just shed his jacket when he sensed a gust from behind.
The drugs had slowed his reaction. By the time he turned, it was too late. Athena pushed the man back into the car, where Newman collapsed onto the seat, her cold fingers gripping his throat.
“Why did you take my son out?!” Athena yelled, but Newman had only one thought: This felt

good.
Her skin was cool, and her fingers like ice cubes cooling him down. Athena glanced at Kevin standing frozen outside.
“Mummy??”
Her cheetah–like charge had startled Kevin. Seeing her kid in a Spider–Man mask, Athena let out a sigh of relief. Kevin hadn’t shown his true face to Newman?
Kevin quickly said, “Mummy, I asked Devil to take me out.”
Athena’s breath hitched. How did her baby get mixed up with such a dangerous man?! “Kevin! I told you to stay away from him! Why’d you go off alone with him? What if he hurt you??”
“Mummy. I’m sorry. Devil’s cool, kind and strong, and fierce! He’s way cooler than Coco!” Kevin wracked his brain, sticking up for Newman, scratching the back of his head.
Then, from below her, Newman’s voice came, “What do you think I’d do to your kid?”
Athena’s teeth ground together, “Back then, you were dead set on using my son to threaten me! Don’t blame me for being cautious around you, Newman!”
Athena didn’t catch the subtle shift in the man’s gaze; she was all worked up about her own little troublemaker.
“Kevin, scoot back to your room and don’t even think about coming out. We’re gonna have a little chat about you playing hooky later!”

Kevin stuck his tongue out at Athena. He sneaked a peek at Newman, who Athena had pinned down, and said, “Mama, go easy on Devil, just a tad, would ya? Looks like Devil’s under the weather.”
After giving his mom a piece of advice, Kevin slammed the passenger door shut and bolted toward the villa.
Athena loosened her grip around Newman’s neck, her palm slick with his sweat.
“Next time my kid asks you to take him out solo, I hope you have the sense to say no, Newman,” with those icy, final words, Athena backed away on her legs, and then she saw.
