Emmanuel turned to Shane with a teasing smile playing on his lips. “Shane,

are you thinking about staying in Eldoria? Have you perhaps caught the eye

of a certain young lady?”

“Hey, what do you mean by ‘caught the eye‘? That sounds a bit harsh, don’t

you think? Have you even brushed your teeth today, Emmanuel?”

Shane waved his hands awkwardly, his cheeks flushing a shade of crimson.

“You really believe only you and Ms. Quillen are capable of true love? Why

can’t I have something real with Sonia?”

“Miss Toma?”

Emmanuel’s smile faltered as he frowned slightly. “Shane, both Santiago and I

genuinely hope you find someone special, but we don’t want you to be

carried away with one–sided feelings. Forgive me for saying this, but Miss

Toma is a delicate flower. She might―”

Whoa. That’s going too far, don’t you think?Shane Interrupted, waving his

hands in protest. “Are you implying I’m like cow dung? Remember Beauty and

the Beast? Besides, Sonia really does like me. If you don’t believe me, just ask

her.

With a dramatic sweep of his hand, Sonia stepped forward from behind

them. Emmanuel, however, had known all along that she was there, his words

deliberately calculated.

Today, Sonia looked especially graceful, her attire subtly flattering her figure,

giving no hint that she was older than Shane. Though not a stunning beauty,

she possessed a gentle charm that made her presence undeniably

pleasant.

But Sonia wasn’t the only one who appeared–Rhea had come as well. Both

women fixed their eyes on Emmanuel, though the meanings behind their

gazes couldn’t have been more different.

“What are you doing here?” Emmanuel asked, his brow furrowing slightly at

the unexpected sight of Rhea.

“Emmanuel, here’s the thing,” Rhea spoke up without hesirion He

want to join the Wolf Warrior Unit.”

Emmanuel’s frown deepened, concern crossing his face, they toew do

“Did Shane tell you about this? And why do you want to join? He continued to

press for answers, his tone thoughtful but firm.

Rhea’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she responded, her enthusicem

almost contagious. “Because you’re a hero, Emmanuel! I admire you deeply,

and I want to contribute in any way I can.” Her voice grew even more

animated. “I’ve done my research. You all need logistics and nurses, right?

With Sonia and me on board, we’d be the perfect addition.*

Emmanuel couldn’t deny that she had a point. The Wolf Warrior Unit was

always in need of nurses, especially female ones, given the challenges they

faced on the front lines. Still, while Rhea’s eagerness was somewhat

expected, Sonia’s sudden involvement left him wondering.

Noticing the subtle shift in his expression, Sonia spoke up quickly, addressing

the unspoken doubt. “Rhea and I were classmates, even roommates back

then. Now, we’re close friends. I also studied nursing, so it makes sense for me

to join.”

Emmanuel chuckled softly, his gaze resting on Sonia. “But you come from a wealthy family, Sonia. Joining the army isn’t easy–it’s grueling work, and I’m

concerned you might not be able to handle the hardships.”

“Who said that?” Sonia responded passionately, her voice rising with determination. “Ask Rhea! We’ve endured plenty together. During military training, we were always the most enthusiastic, never complaining. I was always first in long–distance running, and when we went shopping, I could keep going long after my best friend’s legs gave out. I’ve got endurance.”

Emmanuel couldn’t help but smile at her spirited defense. There was a purity

to Sonia, a charming naivety that somehow mirrored Shane’s dreamer–like

nature. Together, they made an odd but endearing pair.

Shane, sensing an opening, chimed in eagerly. “Come on, Emmanuel, just let

them join! If they do, I’ll join too!”

Emmanuel raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering across his face. “Ok? is

that a condition, or are you trying to turn the tables on me?” He laughed

lightly. “Even though you’re my junior, Shane, I’m not sure your personality is

suited for the army.”

“Who says it isn’t?” Shane replied, his voice brimming with determination. “You

know my name carries the spirit of a hero, Santiago’s always wanted me to

live up to that. If I join the Wolf Warrior Unit, I’ll become a special forces soldier,

defending our borders. That’s how I’ll become a true hero.”

Emmanuel chuckled again, watching Shane’s fiery resolve with mild

amusement. There was no denying the boy’s passion, but his impetuous

nature made Emmanuel hesitate. Still, he didn’t want to shut down their

enthusiasm entirely.

“Alright, here’s the deal,” Emmanuel finally said, his tone becoming more

serious. “If you all really want to join, I’ll arrange an assessment. If you pass,

then you can join.”

The Wolf Warrior Unit was no ordinary battalion. Those who made it into its

tr

ranks were rare talents, individuals who had survived the harshest trials and

faced life–or–death situations, Only then would Emmanuel personally invite

them to join. For anyone else wishing to enlist, the rigorous assessment

would be the only path forward,

“Alright.” The three of them spoke in unison, their voices filled with confidence.

“Sonia, I’d like to have a private word with you,” Emmanuel suddenly

announced. “Shane, Rhea, you two can leave us for now.”

“Yes, Commander.”

With Rhea taking the lead, Shane quickly slipped into his role, fully immersing

himself as a member of the Wolf Warriors.

Emmanuel watched them go, paying little attention to their exit.

Once it was just the two of them, Sonia broke the silence. “Commander, are

you planning to evaluate me alone?” she asked, her tone tentative.

“No.”

She couldn’t help the blush that crept up her cheeks. Despite her post relationships, she still had the heart of a girl in moments like this.

His gaze remained fixed on her, waiting patiently for her to continue

“Well…” Sonia mumbled as she nervously fiddled with her fingers. I’m not really sure if it’s love, but we have a lot in common. He even sings operas with me. And when I’m in danger, he’s the first to risk everything to protect me.

Plus, my dad promised to marry me off to him, so… it wouldn’t be easy to go

back on that, right?”

Emmanuel’s lips curved into a faint smile, but he pressed on. “What if no one

was expecting your father to keep that promise?”

Well… that still wouldn’t feel right,” Sonia admitted. “My dad’s a man of his

word, if he breaks a promise, what’s left of his honor? Besides… I don’t exactly

mind Shane.”

Emmanuel nodded, understanding Sonia’s feelings more clearly now. He

decided to open up to her with some heartfelt thoughts.

“Shane is an orphan,” Emmanuel began, his tone softening. “I’ve watched him

grow up. He can be a bit carefree, always dreaming, and he does have a habit of showing off. But deep down, his heart is pure. He’s a kind soul.”

Sonia nodded in agreement, her expression showing that she understood.

“Since you feel this way and don’t mind his looks or his height, I truly hope the two of you can end up together,” Emmanuel said, his voice full of sincerity.

Sonia smiled and nodded in response. “Alright, I’ll give him another

evaluation. If he passes, I’ll marry him.”

Hearing this, Emmanuel couldn’t help but feel a surge of confidence on

Shane’s behalf. It seemed fate was on Shane’s side, guiding him toward a bit

of well–earned good luck.

After their conversation, Emmanuel turned his attention to his next task. That

evening, he was preparing to head to Zovince, once Sage had everything in

order.

Just as Emmanuel was about to step into the car, Sage appeared beside

him, urgency written across his face. “Commander, our plans might need to

change. We just received an emergency report–the Western Region is

experiencing a once–in–a–century flood. The situation is critical. Ethan has

already left for the Zovince airport. He’s heading to oversee disaster relief on

the ground. Should we meet him in Riverhaven?”

Emmanuel paused, slightly startled by the timing of it all. The coincidence felt almost too perfect. With Ethan heading to Riverhaven, Emmanuel could easily take on the protection detail and visit his wife at the same time.

But as the commander of the Wolf Warriors, he couldn’t afford to think solely

of personal matters. The recent attack on Catherine lingered in his mind,

adding weight to his decision.

“What time is Ethan’s flight?” Emmanuel asked,

“2 a.m.,” Sage replied promptly,

Emmanuel checked the time. They still had over four hours until the fight He quickly issued his instructions. “We need to head to Zovince airport right away to meet Ethan. It’s our responsibility to ensure he reaches the Western Region

safely and can manage the situation.”

“Yes, Commander,” Sage responded, hurrying off to expedite their departure.

As Emmanuel stood under the darkening sky, he couldn’t shake the sense of unease settling over him. Something about the night felt off, a creeping apprehension building as they neared Zovince. Perhaps it was the string of violent events in recent days, but each step forward felt heavier than the last.
