Lies in My Marriage by Lane Abbott

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Just when I thought I couldn’t escape, Tanla unexpectedly opened the door

and entered.

Kevin’s gaze remained fixed on me as I brought the medicine to my lips.

Seeing me take a sip, he finally smiled with relief. Then, shifting his attention

to Tania, he stood up to take the breakfast tray from her.

As he rose to take the tray, his tall figure blocked Tania’s view. Taking

advantage of the opportunity, I quickly tilted the bowl of medicine in my hand

towards the dark floral–patterned blanket covering me, allowing the liquid to

spill out. Then, I swiftly brought the bowl back to my lips, tilting my head back

and pretending to finish the rest of the medicine, with a bit still clinging to the

corner of my mouth. In reality, I had taken a sip and secretly spat it back into

the bowl, making it appear as if some of it remained.

Meanwhile, Kevin had taken the tray and turned towards me.

I yanked off my blanket and placed it beside me before handing the almost

empty bowl to Tania, saying, “I’ll take care of this myself.”

Looking at me approvingly, Kevin placed the tray on the bedside table. Not

forgetting to plant a kiss on my forehead, he then picked up the food bowl,

intending to feed me.

I pretended to blush and pushed him away, saying, “Oh, stop it! You should

hurry up and go to work!”

He smiled handsomely before reaching out to pinch my gaunt cheek. “Alright,

I’ll head to work now. Just rest well after eating. I’ll try to come home early to

spend time with you and Felix.”

Okay!” I looked at him, deliberately showing reluctance. “Just hurry up and

get going. Come home early!”

In reality, I was afraid that he might reach out to fold the blanket beside me.

In the end, he left without making eye contact with Tania the entire time.

Now, only she and I were left in the room. “Tania, is Felix awake yet?” I asked

calmly, hoping to get her out of my way.

“I’ll check on him now. Just take your time eating and call me if you need

anything,” she replied before turning to leave.

Listening to her fading footsteps, I forced myself to take a bite of the food.

Then, I got back into bed, pulled the blanket over myself, and placed the tray

on it. Only then did I start eating slowly.

In truth, I had no appetite at all. At that moment, I was trembling with fear, but

I continued to slowly bring food to my mouth. Firstly, I needed to eat to keep

myself strong from then on. Secondly, I was on guard because there might

be surveillance in this room.

In the past, for security reasons, I had installed surveillance cameras in every

room. After all, I had witnessed too many undesirable things, so I had to be

cautious. Little did I know it would now become a trap I had set for myself.

Kevin had objected to the surveillance in this room back then. He jokingly

said, “We have no privacy left anymore. Aren’t you afraid I’ll watch our

footage as if it were porn?”

Nevertheless, I had insisted on keeping it, although I would only turn on the

cameras when I was absent or at specific times.

It was true that the surveillance camera in this room was rarely on as time

passed. Still, I couldn’t be sure if the camera was active at that moment.

After finishing my breakfast, I took the opportunity to clean my blanket as I

removed the tray. After discreetly using a paper towel to soak up the

medicine, I secretly disposed of it in the toilet and flushed it away.

I played with Felix for a while, then pretended to get exhausted and lie back in

bed. Subsequently, I pretended to fall asleep. Although I didn’t notice.

anything unusual about them, I couldn’t let them discover what I was up to.

Truth be told, I hadn’t detected anything amiss apart from the scent of

Tania’s perfume. There could be plenty of reasonable explanations for that.

Still, pretending to be asleep was agonizing. To make the act convincing, I

dared not move a muscle. Keeping my eyes closed, I pondered various

possibilities and what my next step should be.

My nerves were stretched taut, and my mind was under tremendous strain.

Combined with the fear that engulfed me, I was on an adrenaline high. And

yet, I had to remain in the same position while pretending to be asleep. How

unbearable.

At that moment, I realized that staying awake was scarier than being asleep.

Perhaps it was because I hadn’t slept all night or I was exhausted from

excessive stress–plus, I was physically weak to begin with–I couldn’t tell how

long I had stayed awake, but eventually, I drifted off to sleep.

However, just as I was sinking deeper i
