Chapter 186 Insufficient Balance
Hearing Dane's words, Baron's eyes sharpened.
Afraid that things would get out of hand, Tracy took Baron's hands and somewhat pleaded, "Come on, darling. Don't let some random people barge into our tender moment."
This was the first time Tracy had called him "darling". A shaken Baron looked at Tracy's pleading eyes and his rage dissipated instantly.
He simple stared coldly at Dane and turned back to Tracy. "Let's go back to our clothes."
Patti watched Tracy walk off with Baron and a bit of mischief grew in her eyes.
"Hello, what can I do for you today?"
Baron and Tracy had just walked up next to the display case when a manager in uniform walked over, wearing a professional smile. Tracy pointed at the glass display case to the trench coat on the mannequin, saying, "I'd like this coat for my husband to try, please!"
The manager said apologetically, "Sorry, miss, this is our latest trench coat, you can't try it on."
The coat did look nice, especially on the mannequin, paired with slim trousers and gentleman-style leather shoes. It cut a dashing figure. The more Tracy looked at it, the more she liked the coat. Looking back to Baron, she just felt like it'd fit him so well.
"If we can't try it, then we'll buy it right here!"
Tracy said decisively, bringing out her credit card.
"All right, then!"
The manager was slightly moved.
The coat had been on display for several days, but it was expensive. Not one of the many onlookers it'd gathered had been willing to buy it after learning the price. "Honey, I think that coat's pretty nice. Fits your figure perfectly. How about we buy it?"
Patti's voice rang out. She squeezed in front of Baron and Tracy.
The manager stood there awkwardly. "Very sorry, but this trench coat is limited sales. We've only got one, and that madam has already bought it." "They haven't paid yet, have they?"
Patti snorted.
Tracy had taken a liking to the coat from outside already. Patti's sudden intrusion enraged her.
Dane was about one meter seventy at most. It didn't fit him at all. Patti was just trying to one-up her here.
Patti had been jealous of Tracy's beauty in college and fought Tracy for everything. It had been five years after graduation and nothing had changed.
"You're going too far, Patti!"
Tracy couldn't hold it back and said angrily.
Patti leered. "How am I going too far? Is this your store now? Besides, we'd come to this store first and we'd taken a liking to the coat already. We just walked around and we're paying now. What's it got to do with you?"
"Is that how it is?"
Tracy looked at the manager besides her.
Before the manager could reply, Patti added, "It wasn't her; it was some other manager."
"Which manager was it, madam? If you've already made an agreement to buy the coat, it's yours."
The manager kept her professional smile as she asked Patti.
"What does that have to do with you? Mind your business, won't you?"
Patti glared harshly at the manager.
The manager's face changed slightly, but she kept a forced smile on her face and said politely, "We've got rules in this store, miss. If no one's agreed to buy a piece with a manager, anyone has the right to buy from us."
Hearing the manager say that, Patti switched tactics and sneered. "Tracy, don't fight with me over this. Know what store this is? This is Versace. Look around, see if you can find a piece of clothing here that isn't worth tens of thousands.
"You're a woman from a small family about to go broke, can you afford it? My husband is a project manager at the Brown Group and he makes five hundred thousand a year, how about you? Oh right, I almost forgot, your man's a security guard who tarnished you."
Patti played up her behavior and deliberately got loud.
This wasn't peak hours, but there were still a lot of shoppers around. Hearing Patti's words, many of them gathered around.
"You're probably curious who this woman is, right?"
Patti noticed the onlookers and mocked, "Her name's Tracy Perry. You might not have heard her name, but you probably know how, five years ago, the woman who calls herself the most beautiful woman in Cona - yes, that's her - had an affair with a security guard at her company.
"And this sorry bastard here beside her is the security guard who slept with her five years ago. They're married now, and I heard they have a kid."
Tracy got so mad she started shaking. Her red eyes teared up in humiliation and anger.
"I've heard about this. No wonder she's so pretty, she's the first beauty of Cona!"
"I finally get to see her in person. Didn't think she'd actually marry that security guard."
"Yeah, what a shame. But you know, her husband's quite strapping. Kind of a fit match."
...
All around them, discussions raged. Some were complimentary, others were not.
Tracy heard all of them and her face flushed with shame.
Seeing his wife in such a state pained Baron's heart. How many times had Tracy had to put up with this gossip in the past five years? "Let's go, darling!"
Tracy looked at Baron and said. She wasn't willing to be treated like a circus freakshow.
Baron gripped her hand tight and shook his head, saying seriously, "I told you I wouldn't let anyone bully you anymore!"
"Darling..."
Tracy's eyes were full of emotion.
Her "darling" almost melted Baron's heart, but this wasn't the time for tenderness. His gaze fell on Patti.
Suddenly getting stared at by Baron brought shivers to Patti's body. It felt like being stared down by a wild beast. Heart hammering, she hid behind Dane. "Ignore him, honey, let's buy the coat and go!"
Patti mumbled.
Dane looked coldly at Baron and produced a credit card showily. "I'll take that coat!"
Baron didn't stop him and looked on from the side. He wanted to see if the man could actually afford it.
He'd already seen the price tag on the trench coat. Three hundred and eighty-eight thousand, eight hundred dollars.
When Patti had been bragging earlier, she'd boasted that Dane had a yearly salary of five hundred thousand, but that wasn't believable considering the situation. He was just some project manager for the Brown Group. He'd be paid at most two hundred thousand every year.
He didn't believe Dane could actually afford a coat priced at well over three hundred thousand dollars. Even if he could, he didn't think the man would be willing to spend this much for a piece of clothing.
Of course, even if Dane could afford the coat, he had ways of making the man pay.
"If you can't afford it, don't act like a bigshot in front of us!"
Seeing Baron not do anything, Dane mocked him.
Then the manager walked over. "I'm sorry, sir, your card has insufficient balance!"
"What? Insufficient? How's that possible?"
Hearing that, Dane raged, "I've got two hundred thousand on this card. How could it not be enough for a coat?"
"Sir, this trench coat is priced at three hundred and eighty-eight thousand, eight hundred dollars. No discount for being a new release. Your card does not have sufficient balance!"
The manager's smile had disappeared, replaced by calm and a bit of anger.000000☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
