“Hah! I’ll put up with you for now, but just wait–one day, you’ll be the one begging me! The baby I’m carrying is your true grandchild! You want Caroline to get pregnant so badly, but what’s the point? She may be expecting, but who knows if she’ll even be able to keep it? And even if she does, who’s to say the child will survive for long? Teh, at your age, you should be worrying about how many days you have left.”

After letting out her frustration, Elizabeth felt slightly better.

But it wasn’t enough.

She still needed to lash out at Caroline–that was the only way she’d truly feel relieved.

In the parking lot, Harper got into the car, rolled down the window, and waved. “I’m off now.”

“Goodbye, Mom,” Caroline said with a gentle smile, exuding the kind of grace and warmth that elders found comforting.

Harper’s car drove off, disappearing down the road. Caroline’s smile remained in place.

“Pathetic,” David commented coldly.

She acted as if she didn’t hear him.

“Caroline, I said, it’s pathetic,” he repeated, his voice carrying a sharp edge. “Wipe that smile off your face.”

Something about her expression unsettled him. It felt hollow, unnatural–like she was merely a lifeless doll going through the motions.

“Are you seriously trying to control even this, David?” She shot back. “Are you determined to take over every part of me?”

“Every part of you has always belonged to me.”

Caroline lifted her gaze to meet his.

He saw it clearly–her eyes were filled with nothing but pure despair. It was deep. Unshakable.

“David, you might as well just kill me,” she said softly. “Stop tormenting me.”

“Kill you?” David echoed, tilting his head slightly. His fingers brushed beneath her eyes in a slow, deliberate motion. “Why would I? I could never. You need to stay alive. Stay with me. Grow old with me. Do you understand?”

Caroline remained silent.

“I asked you–do you understand?” David leaned in, his lips nearly touching hers. “Answer me.”

Caroline didn’t blink. She didn’t look away.

“David, we will never grow old together,” she said with chilling calmness. “Either you die, or I do.”

The way he tormented her, controlled her–how could she possibly accept it?

Before the baby was even born, he wanted her to lose it.

And if she managed to give birth, he planned to take the child away.

The hatred brewing inside her was so strong, she wished she could take David down with her.

“You’re not going to die. And neither am I,” David said, his smirk infuriatingly smug. “And your children? They won’t die either. But whether they live well… that all depends on you.”

Caroline’s rage erupted.

Without hesitation, she raised her hand and swung at him–quick, forceful, and precise.

But before she could land the slap, just a Breath away from his cheek, her wrist was caught in an unyielding grip.

She couldn’t move another inch forward. David had stopped her with ease.

His reflexes were faster.

His strength was overpowering.

I stopped her with case.

Pain shot through her wrist as his grip tightened, so fierce it felt like her bones might crack.

“Did you really think you could hit me?” David sneered, his voice full of mockery. “You’re not quick enough. The second you raised your hand, I already knew what you were going to do.” He paused, then arched a brow, smirking. “And if you were holding a knife instead? You’d be even slower. If you really want to kill me, Caroline… you’d better train harder first.”

With that, he released her hand, shoving it away without hesitation.

Caroline staggered backward, barely managing to steady herself.
