Freiyon Fables: The Rochester Runes

Chapter Chapter Sixteen: The Moments Before a Battle

Back in the world of Freiyon, at the top of the mountain hide-out where most of the Freiyons had made their home, it had taken some time for things to be organized there for the Freiyon animals. However everything was soon sorted out and fortunately Jasper and Jarryd were able to lead the huge group of animals down the passage until they came to the weighing stone. When they came to the weighing stone, Jasper showed Libertas what it did and the bear lord stepped on it, being the heaviest creature amongst them. The animals followed Jasper and Jarryd into the tunnel and Lord Libertas ran through the moving wall just before it shut. The animals were glad that they had brought along torches to help them when they were into the hole above where the treasure had been. They had managed to do that by getting every large, strong bird to carry as many animals as they could to the hole. Once one or two helped out, another two would take its place delivering its passengers. Eventually, the entire group came to the exit of the mountain side, and Lord Libertas saw the firm rope still attached strongly onto the boulder.

“As much as I would like to go down this, I am afraid that it may be more dangerous for some than others. Particularly those among us that don’t have claws or strong ability to hold onto the rope. I suggest the birds take down the animals that are unable to climb down this rope and search for Frebil and Joe, hopefully they are near the base of the mountain. When you do find them, inform them of the remaining climbers and send three small birds back to keep an eye on our safety and progress.” The Bear lord said as he stared down.

The birds did as they were told and started to take down younger animals and those animals not good at climbing down on their backs until they came across the area where the avalanche had stopped. At first, the birds thought with worried looks that the avalanche had taken the lives of Frebil and Joe, but these thoughts were demolished when a young platypus saw Frebil waving from the cave the two of them had taken refuge and rest inside. The birds delivered their loads into the cave and, as per instructions, sent two young birds back to keep an eye on the progress of Lord Libertas and the rest of the Freiyons.

It was quite fortunate that on their travel back up the mountain that the two young birds came across the Captain of the Willy wag-tail and they were able to inform the Captain of the relocation and where Joe and Frebil were currently, which was where Lord Libertas and his group were heading now. The captain of the pigeons took the time to check on the area where Joe and Frebil were and decided this information was good to report back to Charles with. The pigeons were very reliable.

Although not who they wanted to be seen by back at the manor first, it had been Robert, who had been keeping an eye out for any grabbers or trees, that was the first to spot the captain of the Pigeons and his troop as they came hurrying back to report their findings.

“Wow! Look at all those birds! They must love it in a place like this.” Christina exclaimed, when she saw them.

“So this is the world you were talking about. You were right all along, children.” Jay reported.

“Boy are you guys in for a surprise.” Sarah exclaimed.

“Look out!” Martha shouted suddenly.

A robot just shot an axe out of its arm at the group and sent it spinning wildly.

Charles’s awfully quick reflexes took over as he grabbed the axe by the handle and flung it back at the robot. The robot was taken by surprise and went completely haywire with the axe protruding from its chest.

“How did you do that?” Robert asked, absolutely astonished.

“Just goo reflexes from fencing, ya know.” Charles boasted.

“Oh, no. The robots have grouped up; they’re coming after us again.” Sarah realised.

The pigeons motioned to Charles to follow them.

“Come with me and we’ll see if we can outrun those metal-heads.” Charles announced.

“You heard him, men. Those of you who don’t have guns, keep up with the children as much as possible; those of you that do, try to help out by keeping the robots’ number down until we’re good and clear.” Jay ordered.

“Right, let’s move out gang! We gotta keep an eye out, there are more than robots and Wag-tails in this world.” Robert announced.

The gang rushed off, leaving Jay and a few of his officers behind to keep back some of the robots for a while.

“Where are we going though, Charles?” Sarah asked her brother.

Charles pointed at the pigeons. “They know.”

“Hang on a minute, I’ll be back, I just want to look at something.” Joe told Frebil and the other animals that were in the cave with him.

Joe ran out of the cave, certain he had seen something.

When he got to a small river he spotted them.

He could see they were all people, mainly adults, which he thought was extremely odd; but there were children as well, four of them.

Joe got in front of the group and stopped them in their tracks.

“I don’t believe this. Charles, Robert, Sarah, and … Christina? What are you doing here?” Joe exclaimed as he hugged his friends.

“What are YOU doing here, Joe?” Christina asked, quite shocked.

Joe smiled. “I’ll tell you later,” then he turned to the others. “Oh, I’m so glad to see you guys. We’ve been having such a hard time trying to find a new hiding spot. You know, Frebil and I had to go abseil for a day and night down that mountain side just to get here just to get there.”

“HAVE you found a hiding spot?” Charles asked, pleased to see his friend as well.

“Oh, silly me! Just follow me. After all we did, I think you’ll be very surprised. Come along,”

Joe’s stop of the group gave Jay and his officers a chance to catch up with the family and the other officers. Now they followed Joe as he took them to the cave.

“Hey, Frebil, better make room for more, look at the company I found.” Joe announced as he entered the sight.

The small group already in the cave looked and saw the large amount of humans. They weren’t sure what to do or say at first, but they figured out quickly that these humans wouldn’t be with Charles, Robert and Sarah if they weren’t there to help.

“My friends! Oh, it’s so good to see you again. Did you get what you wanted?” Frebil exclaimed proudly.

“More than that, Frebil my friend. Meet my girlfriend Christina. She has been a wonderful helper with everything.”

“Miss, I assure you, your friend Charles is the bravest, strongest, heart-felt human I’ve ever known.” Frebil said to Christina.

“That certainly sums him up, Frebil.” Robert agreed whole-heartedly.

“Right then, everyone, sit down and warm yourself, you must have had a horrible journey.” Joe suggested.

“Gum-leaf anyone?” A young koala asked, with a cute smile.

“That animal … it talked like a person. How did it do that?” Mary exclaimed to Charles.

“There’s more where that came from, wait to you meet my other friends.”

“We DID tell you things were crazy around here.” Sarah smiled at her mother thoughtfully.

Mary nodded and sat down, half expecting a pink unicorn to come flying along any second now and allow her to turn into a mermaid. The group sat down by the fire, each person recounting their story in different ways to another. There were laughs and cheers and gasps of fright, but in all that time, Charles realised that they had only just finished one part of the adventure. Maybe a big part, yes, but he knew the biggest was yet to come.
