First Eclipse

Chapter 37

Tim watched her squat down and talk to the rabbits. Everyone he knew thought it was weird that he had a bunch of them for no reason other than to look after them. They had a large yard, lots of vegetation, and shelter, so they were very privileged animals. He turned his back to her when Mac finally answered his phone. "Bad time?"

"Mm, no. Yes. I was trying to grab a nap."

Tim had no idea what time it was. "Royals taking nap shifts again?"

"Trying to." He heard a clunk and wondered if he'd gotten up. "You at home?"

Tim nodded. "Yeah. I didn't know where else to take her."

"That was some messed up shit, hitting her like that. She must be all right. You're not running around killing people."

Tim wasn't going to argue with that. "Did they find out who did it?"

"Princess Reagan says there was a lot of green haze, so I'm guessing mage."

"But they didn't find them?"

"No. The Faterraians set a bunch of traps, so if a mage tries to use magic in that area, we'll get them."

Tim heaved out a sigh. "Good."

"You better call Brosia and get some food. Who knows how long you're going to be there."

"Yeah. I'm going to text her in a minute." He cleared his throat.

"What's wrong?"

Tim felt like a teenager all of a sudden. "I'm going to need to feed by tonight."

"You didn't earlier?"

He sighed. "No. I got distracted trying to figure out a good area in the mountains to take Fauna to look for a friend for Tawny..."

Mac chuckled. "I find that amusing. You forgetting to feed when you constantly remind us because we don't know when we're going to be called or for how long."

Tim sneered. "Yeah, I know."

"She's your mate, why can't..."

"I don't think she's all for the fangs, Mac."

He laughed. "Well, she better get used to them. It's not like they're optional."

"Not helpful."

"Let me grab a nap, and I'll come over and guard your mate so you can go feed, okay?"

Tim nodded. "Thanks."

"You know, while you're there with her, you could..."

"Go to sleep, Mac. I'll talk to you later."

"On it."

He could hear him chuckling as he hung up. Turning around, he looked to see Fauna, rabbits of all sizes, around her and in her lap. He couldn't help but smile. She looked so happy. When she glanced over at him, she smiled, and his heart beat faster. Looking down at his phone, he brought up Ambrosia's number, typed out a short list of basics, and asked if she could get them for him later today. He apologized for the short notice, even though she had gotten used to the hours her brother and he did with their assignments. Sending it, he stuffed the phone back in his pocket and walked back over to the rabbit habitat.

"What's wrong?"

He squatted down. "Nothing."

"Oh. You looked worried while you were on the phone."

Tim scooped up one of the little fuzzy babies. "They don't have any other information yet." Setting it back down, he stood up.

Fauna removed all of the ones in her lap and got up. "Enough brains are working on it. They'll figure it out."

He nodded. Hopefully, they did in time. He watched her brush off her jeans, her hair falling in her face, and she didn't seem to notice it at all. Tim shoved his hands in his pockets so he wouldn't reach over and push it back from her face. When she straightened, she flipped it back and then paused and looked at him. "Are you sure you're okay? I feel like there's something you're not telling me."

Tim blinked. "What? No. Just thinking."

She rolled her eyes. "There are so many things going on right now, I can't even focus." She started walking to the gate. "Finding the anchor is hard enough, but now I have to worry about good light and bad light." She glanced at him. "And animals rushing away and back." She sighed. "Capri-I'm worried about Capri. It can't be easy to digest all of this for her."

Tim held the gate open for her. "We've been battling this for almost a year now." He frowned. "I think." Closing it, he motioned to the house. "Each time we gain a victory in shutting down one major player-three more pop up." She gave him a startled look. He shrugged. "That's what it feels like."
