Chapter 24
Jackson was drunk, anyone could see that. He was stumbling around and bumping into people. He spotted his son speaking with his mother and headed there not caring who he ran into in the process. As he got closer to his family he heard them discussing Charlie which only made Jackson more angry. How dare these people take his daughter away from him.
"You" Jackson bellowed pointing at Sam. "You disrespectful prick. Who do you think you are keeping my daughter away from me? She will be living with me got it? She will know her place and I'll be the one to teach her" Jackson yelled into Sam's face while poking Sam in the chest forcefully. "Have you been drinking?" Maree asked her son. "Stay the fuck out of it Mother" Jackson roared while attempting to push his mother away only to be stopped by Sam standing in front of his grandmother and John stepping towards Jackson. Sam and John might not have been able to save Sally but they sure as hell were not going to allow Jackson to hurt another female. "Know your place Samual, or I'll put you in it. Have that brat ready when I get there. I'll give you time to say goodbye because you will never see her again" Jackson yelled.
Everyone was now watching Jackson and his family. Jackson was usually more controlled in public and now he was losing it in front of everyone. "Don't you dare speak about my sister like that. You will never be anywhere near her" Sam calmly replied. "I may not have been able to protect my mother from your vile behaviour but I sure as hell will make sure to protect Charlie from it" Sam yelled at his father. He had had enough of covering for his father's behaviour. He was now in charge and he would shout it from the rooftop if it meant keeping Charlie safe. "You prick" Jackson screamed before swinging and hitting Sam in the face splitting his lip. Maree shrieked "Jackson no" she called out. John stepped towards Jackson ready to flatten him but was stopped by Sam "Takes a big man to lash out Jackson, mark my words, you will pay for what you have done" John spat.
Sam took out a napkin from his pocket putting it on his lip and then looked at his father. One of the employees had gone to get security to help. Sam smiled at his father, "You made a huge mistake Jackson. You just harmed me which means you never get to see Charlie again. There is a clause that I had entered you see. If you harm others, you can't be around her" Sam stated. "That was never in there" Jackson replied looking horrified. "Oh but it is, it was one of the changes I asked for today just before the files were meant to be at the court. You really should read things before you sign them you know. Oh and just in time security is here. Hold him until the police arrive, I will be pressing charges" Sam stated while smiling.
As security were holding Jackson, the boys were checking on Maree to see if she was ok. She was distraught about where she would stay. After Sally's funeral, she moved to Jackson's place as her husband had continued to threaten her on the way home. Now she was worried about where she would stay. John wanted to go and cause harm to Jackson just like he had done to Sam and Sally. Sam had calmed him down saying this way was better so he couldn't go after Charlie. He had snuck in a clause that allowed Sam to terminate all contact if Jackson was deemed to be a risk. After tonight Jackson would be seen as a risk as he had assaulted Sam and there were many witnesses to testify as well as footage of the incident. Sam had also assured Maree she could stay with them and sleep in Charlie's room as Charlie never used it as long as Maree was ok with the single bed. After Shane and Damien left she could pick a room that would be hers if she wanted to stay. They assured her it would help them and she could care for Charlie while they worked. She and Mrs Harper would help with the care of Charlie.
Once the police arrived Jackson kicked off again trying to cause even more of a scene accusing Sam of kidnapping Charlie. Sam was able to clear it up with the paperwork from the police and the files that had been filed with the court that afternoon and he wanted charges laid. Jackson was escorted out of the party and taken to the police stations screaming threats and insults to his sons and mother. The monster had returned and this time the world would see who Jackson really was.
Sam decided to end the Christmas party early. "Attention please everyone. I would like to apologise on behalf of Jackson, that is the man my brothers and I knew growing up. That was the man who hurt my mother and I'm sorry you all had to witness that. I would like to say thank you to everyone for coming tonight and I apologise for ending the night abruptly however before we go and spend time with family and friends over the holiday season, I would like to assure you all that I will be stepping up as the owner of the firm and will be expanding our services. My father was a cruel man and often threatened to take us children away from my mother if she ever left him. She endured years of abuse and torment and I'm ashamed to say that my brothers and I weren't any help. But, I want to make my mother proud. That's why in the new year this firm will be creating a women's and Children's legal centre offering assistance to women and children who are running from dangerous situations. No woman should be forced to stay in an abusive relationship because they can't afford legal assistance. Myself and any other person here who would like to help will be offering legal advice and representation to women pro bono. To honour my Mother and my sister I am naming the service 'Sally Rose Women's Centre'. Byron" Sam said before Byron got the logo displayed on the screen behind Sam.
"Now, if any one of you would like to help, please flick me an email and we can draw up a roster system. I have already been in contact with domestic violence services and women's refuges which my mother used to flee while pregnant with my sister, and we will hopefully be able to expand that to other services in the new year" Sam continued. His brothers had tears in their eyes seeing the photo of Sally holding up Charlie in front of the cottage she had moved into when she moved out of the halfway house. She looked genuinely happy and it was the perfect photo for the logo to represent the women's service. "Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you all. Here is to a great new beginning for the firm" Sam said before heading to his grandmother, Uncle John and brothers.
"Let's head home to Charlie," Sam said. "Your mother would be proud son" John said to Sam while wiping his eyes of the tears he was shedding.
