Ecstacy of the Heart

Chapter 4 Took a Load off the Mind

"Am I really not dreaming?" Allison lied on the bed. She held the marriage certificate over her head and mumbled. Her mind was jumbled up at the moment and she then remembered the last words Alexander said to her back in the car. He said he could give her anything she wanted, yet only feelings were not included. However, having a second thought of that, wasn't she doing the same thing too?

As early as two years ago, she had completely lost hope on relationship between men and women from that humiliating betrayal. She even felt that she would not fall in love with someone again throughout this life. Or else, she would not go for a blind date.

The reason two people went for a blind date was to show and display their needs blatantly without any feelings. Marriage was only an act for the outsiders to prove that they could live a "normal" life too. Having thought of that, Allison felt that some load had been taken off her mind.

Although it was only pure chance she was able to officially get married to Alexander, the core of the marriage was what she had planned earlier, which was to live a normal life without romance. What more should she be worried about? After some self-consolations, Allison tugged the blanket over, covered her face with it and went fast asleep. It was already five o'clock in the evening when she woke up. The sun was falling below the horizon and the sun glow shone on the far end of her bed. She rubbed her eyes and was not fully awake.

"Alex, right? Come, come, have some water, and have some apples. I bought these at the market this morning, they're indeed fresh." As Allison was still considering whether to have a nap again in a dizzy state, her mother's extremely enthusiastic voice came from outside her room, which made her shuddered. Alex? Water? Apple? Are we having a guest?

Allison scratched her head and only after some time did she remember Alexander saying he was coming to their house. Could it be that Alex was actually President Parker? She darted out of her room like a rocket and the moment she stepped out of her room, she bumped into Jennifer who was going to knock her door while carrying a fruit plate.

Jennifer rolled her eyes at her daughter who was behaving so reckless, and instantly put up a kind-mother smile. She then said with a neither loud nor soft voice, "Alice, good timing. Alex has come, hurry up and welcome him." Allison's heart gave a leap when she heard her mother's voice. She peeked at the clock on the wall and noticed the clock needle had exactly pointed at six. He really came! And he was really punctual.

With a wry smile, Allison had the urge to escape back into her room, yet Jennifer was agile enough to grab her on the arm. She dragged her to Alexander who was sitting on the couch in the living room. "You guys could have a chat, I'm going to cook." After saying that with a smile, Jennifer quickly retreated.

The air in the living room seemed to freeze at once. Allison stood there and did not know what to do for a moment. She did not even know where to look. She sometimes looked at the tip of her toes and sometimes glimpsed at Alexander. Alexander had worn a set of grayish-white sport clothes. He looked composed but sporty, and looked friendlier compared to the look he had in the suit he wore during the day Did he actually return and change his clothes? Allison started to get distracted from her thought once more.

"Allison." Alexander spoke and broke the silence. Allison lifted her head due to reflex and blurted out, "President Parker." She felt something was not right after she said that as she had not told him she was one of the workers in the Parker Group. Now that she had exposed her identity, would he think she was very calculating? Would he suspect her to be the one that organize and plan the blind date? She had imagined countless scenarios in her mind in just a short moment.

Yet unexpectedly, Alexander did not care what she had said and he continued. "Give me your hand." Allison extended her hand docilely. "Left hand," he said. Allison retrieved her right hand and extended her left hand obediently. Alexander then took out a platinum ring and put the ring on her left ring finger. His movement was gentle and elegant without any hesitation.

Yet Allison was completely shocked. Her heartbeat plummeted and she could not say a word when she looked at the ring on her finger. As she looked towards him, she noticed there was an exact same ring on his left ring finger. Yet his fingers were slender and clean, making the ring exceptionally good-looking. "The size fits exactly." Feeling content with his judgment, Alexander nodded.

"I..." Emotion once again surged inside Allison. "I told you I'll give you everything you want." Alexander lifted his eyes and looked at her. "From now on, you can call me Alex, and I'll call you Alice." His voice was very soft yet assertive.

"I..." Allison tried to appease the emotion she felt in her heart with all her strength and she asked, "Isn't this too soon? We only had our first met and you seem to not know me yet?" Her face flushed due to anxiety and she finally said what she wanted to say. She was actually not worried to get married to him as she would not suffer any loss after all. Yet it would be a huge loss to him! The title of Mrs. Parker was definitely far more precious than ten big trucks loaded with diamonds and she was the one getting tremendous profit!

"What do you mean by knowing you?" Alexander slightly lifted his eyebrow. Allison pursed her lips when she was being asked and she gave a few examples. "Like what's my name, where do I work, which university did I graduate from..."

"Your name is Allison Gibson, you're twenty-four years old this year, you graduated from the Administrative Management Faculty of Johns Hopkins University and are now working at the Parker Group, you had a boyfriend who studied finance back in university and you broke up when you graduated..."

"Okay, okay." Allison quickly interrupted him until she heard that. She was a little embarrassed when her past relationship was mentioned and her face flushed at once. While for Alexander, he was still composed as usual and was answering her questions in a serious manner. Allison swallowed salvia. It seemed like Alexander did know her.

Yet speaking of her past relationship, would he be interested or would he misunderstand? Having some deep considerations, she finally decided to explain to him regarding that. She then mumbled. "We had a pure relationship back then, me and my boyfriend at university."

"We only held hands twice." Allison's face and ears flushed when she said that. Alexander did not actually care about her past relationship in the first place, yet when he saw her being so serious to tell him that he could not help but think there was some cuteness in the girl before him and the aloofness on his face lessened.¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶☐☐☐
