Chapter 1532
Ben would never believe the truth, and his mother would never allow Charlie's existence. Instead of creating chaos and an irreparable fallout, Jamie chose to keep it hidden. She thought that once Ben's anger subsided, he would eventually let her go. "Even if you figure out who the father is, what difference does it make?" Jamie met Ben's intense gaze calmly. "We've already said everything that needed to be said. Can't we stop making each other's lives miserable?"
"Your mother offered so much money. Why wouldn't I take it? I'm not a fool. I gave you up for one million before. After these past four years, do you really think there's any love left between us? Do you honestly expect me to cry and beg for you?"
Jamie's voice was steady as she stared calmly at Ben. She had been scared at first, but over time, she had come to terms with her reality. Ben wasn't going to kill her. And as long as she stayed alive, there would eventually come a day when he'd let her go. Right now, his anger was the only thing keeping her here.
"Do you think that's possible?" Ben let out a cold laugh, his expression a mix of mockery and pain.
"No, it's not," Jamie replied, her tone unyielding. "So you can't blame me. You've locked me up here, but why not go to Winnie instead? Winnie truly loves you. As for the baby in her belly-"
"That child isn't mine," Ben cut her off sharply, his voice rising in anger. "So what if she loves me? I love you, Jamie. But how have you treated me?"
His dark eyes bore into her, filled with resentment and bitterness. Ben's love for her had once been overwhelming, but now it had turned into a searing hatred.
He said with a bitter laugh, "But how could someone like you ever understand love? Up until now, you haven't even mentioned the father of your child. Did you destroy him too?"
Jamie's chest tightened at his words, each one cutting deeper than the last. The father of her child was standing right in front of her. He was the man she loved more than anything. But she couldn't tell him the truth.
"That's my business," Jamie said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her chest. "I haven't done anything to you yet because I wanted to give you a chance. But if you keep holding me here and something happens to Charlie "
"What will you do?" Ben interrupted, stepping closer, his tone laced with menace.
Jamie's defiance wavered under the weight of his piercing gaze. She lowered her head, the fight slipping from her voice. "What can I do to you, a powerful lawyer? If you truly believ@my death is the only way you't let me go, then fine, go ahead. But before you do, find Charlie. He's innocent. Winnie is innocent."
Her plea only stoked Ben's fury. "Innocent? You care so much about everyone else's innocence, but did you ever stop to think that I might be innocent too? Jamie, did I not give you everything? Did I not love you with all my heart?"
Ben grabbed Jamie's hand, slamming it against his chest with force.
Back when he was still Jack Green,
he had given her everything he believed was the best. He had dreamed of walking down the aisle with her wearing a wedding dress and tuxedo, starting a life together. He had brought her meals, studied by her side, shared countless little moments that had once been the highlight of his life.
Those memories now clawed at Jamie's heart. She dared not dwell on them too long, afraid that if she did, the floodgates of her emotions would burst wide open.
Digging her nails into her palm, she
forced herself to stay cold and composed. You should know better than anyone, Ben, that some things can't be traded or balanced. You, a lawyer, should understand human nature by now. Haven't you seen enough of it?"
