Chapter 5

After I finished speaking, Emily instinctively glanced at Michael’s lips, almost as if she wanted to kiss him. Michael, looking slightly uncomfortable, said, “Let’s go inside.” Emily stepped aside, allowing Michael and me to enter.

Inside the living room, three guys and a girl were sitting around playing video games. Two of them were Michael’s college friends, and the other two were childhood friends of both Emily and Michael. They acknowledged me with a nod before resuming their game, making me feel like an outsider. I regretted agreeing to Michael’s invitation to the party. Since I was already there, I decided to find a quiet spot to sit.

Michael turned to me and said, “Juliana, why don’t you give Emmy a hand in the kitchen? She could use some help.” I gave Michael a cool look but said nothing as I made my way to the kitchen.

Once next to Emily, I noticed that all the dishes were takeout, simply needing to be transferred from their containers to serving plates to disguise their origins. I smirked internally and reached. out to help with the task. Emily folded her arms, smirking coldly, “Why did Mikey bring you here?”

Dropping any pretense, I answered directly, “Because your dear Mikey is still my boyfriend. Acting like this makes you the other woman, you know.”

Emily seethed, “What right do you have to take Mikey from me? We’re childhood sweethearts and meant to be together. You’re shameless! You’re the one ruining our relationship!”

Not wanting to engage further, I continued plating the food. Once done, I prepared to take the dishes to the dining room. Emily, holding a dish of fish, purposely let it slip from her hands.

The plate shattered on the floor, fish scattered everywhere, and the sauce splattered across the room.

“Ahhh!” Emily screamed dramatically. Michael rushed in, looking worried, “Emmy, what happened?”

Copying a frightened look, Emily, with tearful eyes, said, “Mikey, I’m okay. Don’t blame Juliana–it was my fault. I couldn’t hold it steady. It’s really not her fault…”

Instinctively, I started to defend myself but stopped when I saw Michael’s worried expression as he held Emily’s hand. I realized my words wouldn’t matter.

Seconds later, Michael frowned at me, his tone stern, “Juliana, apologize to Emmy.”

Any lingering hope I had for Michael vanished as he demanded an apology without knowing the truth. I replied firmly, “She dropped the plate herself. I didn’t touch her. Belie what you

want.”

Michael insisted, “But because of you, Emmy was startled. Shouldn’t you apologize?”

I countered, “Your lovely sister called me shameless. Shouldn’t she be the one apologizing?” sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FɪndNøvel.ɴᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Emily hid in Michael’s arms, tears streaming, “Mikey, I didn’t. Juliana’s lying. Mikey, you have to believe me…”

I took out my phone and played a recording. I had a habit of recording conversations, thanks to a colleague, Jane. She had taught me to document everything given our sensitive work environment so as not to be caught off guard.

The recording replayed Emily’s words: “…You’re shameless! You’re the one ruining our relationship!”

Emily turned pale, and Michael’s face darkened. Taking a step

back, I said, exhausted, “I’m going home. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

Ignoring any response, I stepped over the mess and left, tuning out Emily’s feigned sobs.

I was done caring.
