Chapter 4 In Between Days
“Our mom dying and our guys getting sick, that’s a lot to process and digest, Vic. The wounds are still fresh. We never got to say goodbye to her, she had already been cremated by the time we got back to Maine. All we have are photos and memories. She didn’t get to know us as adults or see her grand kids.”
Daphne sat slouched in what she called ‘the big chair’ in her sister’s living room with a ready box of Kleenex in her lap and a waste basket next to the chair.
“I know, Daph but we really have only ourselves to blame. We were so wrapped up in our own lives and didn’t want to think about our pasts. And don’t fall apart on me now, Cosi and Lenny need our full support. Don’t get distracted by a pretty face, Lenny is still alive.”
“Barely. Got anymore cognac?”
“I do but you’re going to feel like shit in the morning. You sound like you’re giving up.”
“Oh, Vic, I don’t know. Don’t you miss having a husband who’s there… all there? Physically and mentally. I’d even take the boring version Lenny in bed. Don’t you ever get horny?”
“Sure, I do! I’ve got a night table drawer full of toys and KY to take care of that!”
“But it ain’t the same and you know it. I need someone to tell me I’m pretty, to slide his arms around my waist, to kiss me and rip off my clothes, to…”
“Are you sleeping with him?! Bakar is nothing but a filthy opportunist! He’s made plenty of passes at me, too!”
Daphne grabbed a tissue and blew her nose, then, took another sip of her drink, avoiding eye contact with Victoria.
“Tell me! Are you?!”
“Okay, I’m weak. I have needs too and a dildo has no face. And Bakar is good… I mean, really good…”
“Spare me the details. He’s a low life. Poor Lenny, if he knew, it would kill him.”
