114 Alexander’s Realization
The intense surgery session stretched on for eight strenuous hours, and by the time Gable emerged from the operating room, exhaustion was etched across his face. Alex, noticing his pale complexion, was immediately concerned. “You look drained. Are you okay?”
Gable managed a faint smile, assuring Alex he was fine. He informed Alex that his sister would recover well but needed time. He declined Alex’s offer for a meal, opting to head home and rest.
The night air was cool as Gable returned home. The family was gathered, but they hadn’t expected him so late.
“You’re finally back!” Maxwell exclaimed, embracing Gable. “We were worried sick.”
Gable was happy to see his family, especially Emma, whom he hadn’t seen since her marriage. He hugged her tightly, relieved she was okay.
Emma, surprised by Gable’s arrival, was eager to catch up. “Where were you today? I tried calling.”
Gable explained his unexpected surgery, then remembered to ask about Emma’s visit to Alex’s sister.
The family exchanged puzzled looks. “Who’s Alex’s sister?” Wayne asked, confused about the connection.
Gable clarified, “Alex’s sister was in an accident. I operated on her. Isn’t she related to us through Emma?”
The room went silent as everyone processed the information. Finally, Maxwell spoke up, “I think you’ve missed a lot while you were away.”
Realizing something was off, Gable checked his phone. He was shocked to find numerous articles about Emma and Alex’s divorce.
Gable couldn’t believe he had been so out of touch. He had performed surgery for Alex’s sister, not realizing Emma and Alex were no longer together. The revelation left him stunned, wondering how he had missed such a crucial turn of events in his sister’s life.
