Chapter 0021
Chapter 0021
Caroline's POV:
Silence reigned as William's mind struggled to comprehend my words. Slowly, he grabbed a bottle of booze off of the coffee table and tool swig, followed by a look of genuine disbelief.
"You won't die," he said at last, his voler cracking with emotion. "You can't die. If you die, then... then I'll die with you."
The cold grip of sadness had my heart in its clutches and I could only shake my head. The desperate look in his eyes only broke my heart. It's just the alcoliol, I tried to tell myself. He's too wasted to understand what he was saying "William, you're drunk," I whispered, my voice warbling with emotion. "What about Sophia and George? Did you just forget them?"
Pain overtook his expression as he seemed to finally remember his future wife and baby
boy. "Oh, right," he murmured, conflict evident in his tone. "I have a girlfriend and a child." The look he gave me spoke of someone who was truly lost. "They need me. What am I going to do?"
After all the pain he'd caused me, now he was asking me for help. He had dug himself into this hole, and now he couldn't pull himself out of it. "I can't answer that for you, William," I croaked, swallowing my grief for him. After all he'd done to me, he didn't deserve my sympathy, and yet I couldn't help the ache in my heart.
"Oh..." William's swaying in place was the only warning I got, and I was able to move away just before he slumped over and laid on the couch. "What am I going to do...?" he murmured, sounding hopeless like this.
I watched on as William fell asleep, apathy and pity warring in my heart. Even passed out, thyan dipity warring in my heart. Even passed out, he was still one of the most handsome men I had ever laid eyes on. I studied him closely, wondering if this was all just some big mistake
Perhaps everyone would have been better off if William and I had never met. In this false reality, I would have never had to endure the pain he caused me and he would have the family he'd always wanted. That would mean all the genuinely good moments I'd had with William would disappear just as easily, and after seeing my ex-husband like this, I didn't know if I wanted to let those go.
Unable to bear dwelling on it any longer, I stepped away from William's slumbering form and went to get my things. I passed by Gerald on the way, who had been getting ready to retire for the night. "Please, take care of William for me," I begged gently. The housekeeper patted my arm in reassurance, "I will," he promised, before going off to see William to bed.

Chapter 0021
A cab service came to take me and my things out of the villa. Just before I took that final step out of my once-home, I cast one last look back at William's sleeping form. For such a large, well-built man, he looked so peaceful when he slept. Where did it all go so wrong? With a shake of my head, I left villa, hoping to never come back.
Upon returning home, I was immediately bombarded with questions from Martin and Cindy. They'd been so worried for me, and they wouldn't leave me alone until they were sure I was alright. Making my appreciation known all the while, I reassured them that I was fine. Other than giving me quite the scare, William hadn't actually done anything to me. Although their behavior was still tinged with worry, they took my answer as it was and moved on.
The next day, I had to go for another round of chemotherapy. My hair was beginning to come out in clumps, and with every round I went through, it was only getting worse. Thankfully I had Martin there to comfort me.
"I've heard the sciences have made a breakthrough when it comes to cancer therapy," he
cancer, too. I've contacted one of the top doctors on
mentioned. "That includes stomach"
the subject to see if he can help your case."
With all my energy drained from chemotherapy, all I could do was give him a tired smile. " Thank you," I whispered to him. "You've already done so much for me. I owe you and Cindy everything."
Martin placed a comforting hand on my shoulder as he pulled into my driveway. "Hey, don't worry about it," he replied softly. "We're here for you. Just try to survive, alright?"
I nodded, a determined look crossing over my face. "I will," I promised him. "I'll try my best."
It was asl left the car that I got a call. I peered down at my phone, hoping the caller wasn't who I thought, but sure enough, it was William.
As soon as I answered the phone, William's grumbling could already be heard from the other side. "William, what is it?" I asked, itching to hang up already.
"You were the one who was with me last night, weren't you?" he asked, his voice sounding both annoyed and accusatory.
I was already tired of this conversation. Why was this being brought up?
"Is it important?" I asked, trying not to lose my patience.
"No. No, it isn't important at all," William replied, his voice taking on a careful tone laced with suspicion. "But you've got hair all over my bed and sofa."
I stopped in my tracks, silent and stunned. I tried to speak, but any words I could muster

were choked back with conflict.
My lack of a proper response elicited a knowing hiff from William. "Are you doing this on purpose?"
I'd been so busy arguing with him about his ridiculous behavior that I hadn't even had time to clean my hair of all the loose strands that had been falling out. Did he know that it wasn't normal for someone to lose clumps of hair like I was? Surely he wasn't going to get suspicious, right?
The next time William spoke, his voice was steady and dead serious. "Caroline," he began, "a normal person can't lose that much hair in one night. Tell me the truth. Are you sick?"
