Chapter CHAPTER 53
Sounding so scary!
She was tempted to hang up, toss the phone away and pretend she never got the call in the first place.
But she knew it was just a fantasy.
Kira hummed and hawed.
She was in the middle of a game.
How could she leave?
Austyn, reading her mind, warned, 'Come down, or else
Kira had developed a keen sense of her husband's caprices after having lived under the same roof for over a year.
That flat, monotonous tone.
That ominous silence.
He was on the verge of going ballistic.
Kira gripped her phone. "But I'm in the middle of "
'Fifty seconds.
Then the line went dead.
Kira fumed.
She stabbed a finger at the phone, imagining the screen to be Austyn's arrogant, haughty, imperious face.
Such a dictator!
Kira gritted her teeth.
But she was beholden to him.
She had to do as he commanded.
'Hmph!' she said to herself. 'One of these days, I'm going to have boatloads of money and I'll hire you to be my houseboy and I'll get to boss YOU around." Though it was more likely that pigs would learn to fly before that happened, it never hurt to indulge in a little daydreaming.
Kira breathed out.
She knew when she was beaten.
As soon as she stood up, however, she was confronted with another problem.
She was on the fifth floor.
How could she get down there in one minute?
Oh no, it was forty-five seconds now and counting.
Tossing the cards aside, Kira shot out of the room like a cannonball and disappeared before her colleagues could say Jack Robinson.
Revellers heading into Sam Palace and a shopping mall nearby stopped to admire the Hummer.
Darug'd You Do And Damned if You Don't
Evolved from the military Humvee, the tank-like behemoth was more commonly seen on the battlefield than on civilian roads.
Its rugged design gave it the appearance of a hulking beast.
A traffic policeman nearby kept glancing at it.
The car took up a huge amount of space and was in a no-parking zone.
He was about to approach its driver and ask him to get a move on, but held back when he glimpsed the license plate.
He recognised the plate number.
The officer took a few steps in the opposite direction and gave the car a wide berth.
With a plate like that, the vehicle's owner was not subject to traffic rules.
He would have no right to pull the car over even if it ran a red light.
Inside the Hummer, Austyn checked his watch for the eighth time.
Kai ventured to speak up for Kira. "Boss, one minute may be too short. I don't think Young Madam can get down here in time."
Austyn swept his impatient eyes over his assistant. 'You talk too much."
"Sorry." Kai zipped his lips and said no more.
When he looked out the tinted window, he caught sight of a slim figure jogging towards the car.
Kai looked again, then he tapped on the window.
Austyn shot him an irritated look. "If you have something to say, spit it out!"
The hapless assistant opened and closed his mouth a few times, like a fish out of water.
'Damned if I talk, damned if I don't, he thought. There's just no winning with my boss. Who knew a PA's job is tougher than serving in the army? I think I should demand combat pay." He pointed to his mouth.
"You can talk now!' Austyn growled.
'Young Madam's here."
