Chapter 390 Rules Cannot Be Broken
'Wow, it is so ridiculous that Toby is willing to tell me such stupid lies to cover up for Zed. I have to give in to Zed for having such loyal employees.' Jean wondered and rolled her eyes, looking at Toby and not bothering to hide her disdain.
Seeing the look on Jean's face, Toby's eyes widened and immediately read what she was thinking. "Mrs. Jean, what I just told you isn't a lie." With a bitter smile, he spoke once more, trying to convince Jean. "Believe or not, I am telling the truth."
Jean narrowed her eyes at Toby. She crossed her arms on her chest and said," How could you know such private information about Zed? It is impossible, you see. I don't even know about those things, so tell me again, can you still say that you are not lying?" She sneered at him, rolling her eyes once more.
"Mrs. Jean..." Unable to find his words, Toby paused and gave Jean a weak and bitter smile. After a long while, before Jean could turn and walk away impatiently, he explained," There are some confidential information that I shouldn't have told you about, but seeing that Mr. Zed has been misunderstood, I don't think I have any other choice but to tell you. Needless to say, even though I am not excellent in my job, Mr. Žed has been treating me well ever since I met him, so I try my very best to return his generosity by being loyal and helping him more than I should in every possible way that I can. In the past, I have to stay close to him to protect him without leaving."
Jean couldn't help but suddenly feel a hint of sorrow in his voice.
'He's not happy about Zed for sending him to protect me, right?' she thought, trying to put the pieces together.
She instantly looked at Toby, still narrowing her eyes towards him. She contemplated the situation for a moment before breaking the silence between them. "Since Zed treats you well, I can't allow you to work as an invisible man. From now on, you can follow me openly." Without waiting for his reply, Jean turned and continued to walk away.
Stunned, Toby stared at Jean's retreating figure, shocked about what she had said after the conversation they just had. He pondered whether her heart changed for Zed even just a little.
Realizing that Toby wasn't following her from behind, she stopped and turned around. "What are you waiting for? Follow me! Quick!" she called, waving her hand impatiently.
Coming back to his senses, Toby shook his head and hurriedly caught up with Jean. When he was drawing closer, Jean continued to walk. As Toby neared and walked just a few steps behind her, he talked. "Mrs. Jean, I hope you're not putting me on a dilemma on purpose. I think it'll be best if I watch over you in secret."
"No." She stopped to glare at him, making Toby stop walking as well. "I feel uncomfortable when I'm aware that someone is following me. Also, Zed sent you here. Why would I place you in such dilemma? If you want to protect me, you can't stay somewhere in private. Do you understand?"
She cocked eyebrow at him and turned her attention once more to walking. At that moment, Toby realized that whatever he would say to argue about the matter was totally useless for Jean. It already sounded like she had made up her mind. He also didn't know how to deal with the situation, making him upset.
'If I knew that Mrs. Jean is such a threat when she loses her temper, I would not have said so much tonight,' he thought regretfully, shaking his head, before following Jean.
After a few minutes of walking, Jean spoke, breaking the serenity of the night. "You haven't told me what Zed had said when that woman climbed into his bed." Toby was speechless for a short while, not expecting this sudden inquiry from Jean.
Before she lost her temper once more, Toby quickly replied. "Well, if I remember it correctly, he said, "Serena, you're in my room. Your room is right beside this room."
Jean's eyes widened in surprise and suddenly laughed. "That woman must have turned red in humiliation!"
"Unfortunately, that's not the case, Mrs. Jean." She immediately stopped laughing and looked at him curiously. "Foreign women are not the shy type. Hearing Mr. Zed's voice did not make her leave, but instead, it turned her on. So she expressed her feelings to Mr. Zed by..."
"Okay, enough! I don't want to hear the details." Jean said, interrupting Toby. The mirth on her face completely faded away. She opened the door with such despondency at the vision that was forming in her head. Before she entered, she turned to look at Toby with such cold eyes.
Toby felt the cold run down his spine and couldn't help but lower his head. He blinked his eyes at her, not knowing how to react. She didn't know what she wanted him to do. All he knew was that he had asked her information, and now that he had given, he regretted again about speaking more than he should.
"What are you waiting for? Come in!" Jean interrupted Toby's train of thoughts, waving him over.
"Mrs. Jean, please enter first, and I will follow behind you." He replied hastily and gestured his hand towards the door, not wanting to make her temper even worse.
Jean looked at him and without a word, she entered the house and walked straight to the living room. She sat on the sofa, taking comfort after a tiring walk, and said, "Toby, come. We're not done talking yet."
He quickly moved towards her and stood in front of her with respect.
Jean rolled her eyes and sighed. She couldn't help but frown at how stiff a wood Toby was. She gestured the sofa across her and said, "You don't have to be so formal in front of me. Sit down, and please, relax. I'm not going to bite you."
"Rules cannot be broken," he said firmly and stayed on his spot without any intention to move. Before she could insist any further, he looked at Jean seriously and asked, "What would you like to talk with me about, Mrs. Jean?"0000000
