Chapter 11

I looked at them with disappointment, remaining silent.

Greta’s eyes gleamed with excitement as she turned to my brother. “James, once Janina is dead, we’ll be rich, right?”

“Of course, we’re her immediate family. Once she’s gone, all her wealth will be ours,” James replied confidently.

“That’s wonderful! I want to buy a villa with a swimming pool, buy all sorts of designer bags, and live like a wealthy socialite that everyone envies!” Greta was already dreaming of her future.

My parents and James also resumed their smiles, their eyes revealing their utmost excitement. My death seemed to be their greatest wish.

My expression grew colder, and I said sharply, “I’m afraid you will be disappointed.”

“What do you mean by that?” They all looked at me. Their excitement turned to confusion.

Slowly, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and said calmly, “Officer Lyon, did you hear that? They just admitted to their crime.”

As I finished speaking, the tightly closed door suddenly burst open with a loud crash. A large group of police officers stormed in and immediately restrained my family.

Amid the shock and confusion of my whole family, I slowly stood up, looking at them coldly.

“You… you’re fine?”

“What’s going on?”

At this moment, they were all stunned. Their excitement and anticipation vanished utterly.

I smirked and said sarcastically, “Did you really think I was that stupid? After being deceived by you for so many years, do you think I’d ever believe anything you say again?

“From the moment you called and asked me to come home for a reunion dinner, I knew it was a trap. So, just now, I ate whatever you ate, and I didn’t touch any dishes you didn’t touch.”

I picked up the glass of orange juice. “As for this specially prepared orange juice, did you really think I would drink it? I just pretended to swallow. It’s a trick I often use in prison.

“I should thank you. In there, I learned quite a few life–saving skills. So, your little tricks were easy for me to see through.

I spoke calmly while James and the rest grew increasingly shocked.

Before coming home, I had already called the police and arranged for them to wait outside, keeping them on the line throughout. So, everything my family did was recorded.

“Janina, you…you’re so cunning!” James pointed at me, trembling all over.

I sneered, “What? You think you’re allowed to poison me, but I’m not allowed to defend myself?”

Then I turned to the officer and said, “Officer Lyon, take them all away. I refuse any form of mediation.”

“Understood.” With that, the police took all four of them away. They continued to curse at me throughout the process, but it no longer hurt.

Later, they were sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder. During that time, they tried to see me and seek my forgiveness, but I refused every request.

To me, they had become irrelevant strangers. I wanted no further contact with them.

My life continued in busy solitude. Though I had no family, I didn’t feel it was bad. After all, not every home was a safe haven.

Eventually, I met a man who truly loved me, and we started a new family together. We had a beautiful daughter.

Looking at her adorable face, I swore to myself that I would give her the truest, best love possible and make sure she knew that life was worth living.
